Troy Softball Primed for Carolina Classic

TROY, Ala. – Following another impressive 4-1 weekend, the Troy Softball team will embark on a 12-game road swing by first visiting Columbia, S.C., for the Carolina Classic beginning Friday at Beckham field.

The Trojans (9-2) picked up another pair of wins over 2021 NCAA Tournament teams after downing Eastern Kentucky and Ole Miss last weekend. Troy is primed yet again to face a pair of teams fresh off regional appearances at the Carolina Classic this weekend.

Leanna Johnson and Kelly Horne swept the Sun Belt Pitcher and Player of the Week awards following the 5-1 week.
Â
Horne leads the team batting at a .625 clip with five doubles, four home runs and 11 doubles. The junior ranks second nationally in batting average, slugging percentage (1.333) and walks per game (1.45).

Leanna Johnson (5-1) continues to pave the way in the circle with a 1.47 ERA over 43 innings of work. The Trojan ace leads the nation with 69 strikeouts.

- Miami (OH) will be the first of Troy's two matchups with 2021 NCAA Tournament teams. The Redhawks (2-3) are on a two-game win streaks with victories over Bradley and IUPUI.
 - Ohio State (7-1) won four of five games last weekend is Leesburg, Fla. as part of The Spring Game. The Buckeyes ranked No. 25 in this week's Extra Inning Softball poll this week.
 - No. 8 Virginia Tech (8-2) head into the Carolina Classic with their only two losses coming at the hands of No. 2 Alabama. The Hokies have picked up wins over Wisconsin, Northwestern, Michigan State, Missouri and Kentucky.
 - South Carolina (8-2) is set to host the Carolina Classic after going a perfect 5-0 in the Battle at the Beach. The Gamecocks two losses have come to North Carolina and Charlotte.
