TROY, Ala. – Powered by 20 hits on the day, Troy downed Nicholls State, 10-9, before picking up a win over SEC foe Ole Miss, 4-3, in the second consecutive season Saturday at the Troy Softball Complex.
The victory marks the second consecutive season that Troy (9-1) has defeated the Rebels, and third straight season Troy has earned a victory over an SEC program.
Game One: Troy 10, Nicholls State 9
The Trojans struck first, using a single by Audra Thompson and a sac-fly from Taylor McKinney to take an early 2-0 lead.
Nichols (1-8) would answer with a pair of runs off Troy starter Libby Baker to tie the game at two in the second.
In the bottom of the second, Troy loaded the bases with one out, before scoring four times.
A pair of walks by Anslee Finch and Thompson scored the first two runs of the frame, before Katelynn de Leon closed the scoring with a two-RBI single to right that scored Baker from third and Finch from second.
Armed with a 6-2 lead, Baker worked around a leadoff walk to hold Nicholls scoreless in the top of the third.
Logan Calhoun reached on an error and Jade Sinness single to right, setting up Baker with two in scoring position. The hurler cracked a single to right that plated Troy's seventh and eighth run of the afternoon.
Brianna Bailey (1-1) entered in relief of Baker and eventually picked up the win. Bailey found trouble early in the fourth, as the Colonels used an RBI double and fielders' choice to draw to within 8-4.
After Calhoun tripled home a run in the home half of the fourth, Nicholls struck for five runs in the visitor's half of the fifth, tying the game at nine.
The Trojans went ahead for good in the last of the fifth, when Kelly Horne and Baker led off with back-to-back singles. A sac-bunt advanced the runners to second and third, before Troy eventually loaded the bases on another Thompson walk.
With the bases loaded and one out, Katie Lively lifted a flyball to center that scored Emma Grace Walker from third base.
Needing to close things out, Troy turned Leanna Johnson (5-0, SV1), who promptly fired two perfect innings with five strikeouts to nail down her first save of the young season.
Game Two: Troy 4, Ole Miss 3
Rebels (7-3) struck first Saturday, using a leadoff single and double to plate the game's first run. Johnson limited the damage in the opening frame, using a pair of strikeouts and a line drive to left to strand a pair.
After the teams traded zeros in the second, Ole Miss doubled its lead in the third on a sac-fly by Paige Smith.
Candela Figueroa opened the home half of the third with a double and later scored on a Sinness single to right. The RBI knock cut the Ole Miss lead to 2-1. One batter later, the Trojans tied the game, when Horne ripped a run-scoring double down the left field line.
With two outs and Horne at third base, Finch put the Trojans ahead for good when she cleared the wall in right, the blast was her second of the season.
Johnson then worked around singles in the fourth, fifth and sixth, to fire three zeros.
Just three outs from the victory, Johnson gave up a lead-off walk to Nyomi Jones who later advanced to second a passed ball. The Brantley, Ala., native rebounded with back-to-back strikeouts, the seventh and eighth of her outing.
Down to its final out, Ole Miss continued to battle, loading the bases on back-to-back free passes. With the tying runs in scoring position, the Rebels got to within 4-3, a batter later, when Sydney Gutierrez reached on a Johnson error.
Needing just one more out, Johnson sealed her fifth win of the season on the very next pitch, when she coaxed a flyout to center.
