TROY, Ala. – A second quarter surge from Felmas Koranga powered Troy past Georgia State, 67-56, to kick off the Trojans' final home weekend Thursday in Trojan Arena.
Felmas Koranga finished the game with 15 points after scoring 10 in the second quarter. The junior also added 13 boards, good for her 11th double-double of the season.
Alongside Koranga, Jasmine Robinson and Amber Leggett both finished the game with 15 points. Robinson has now scored in double-digits in five straight contests for the Trojans (19-7, 10-2 Sun Belt).
For Georgia State (8-14, 2-8 Sun Belt), Ashley Foster led the way with 14 points after going 4-for-9 from behind the arc.
How It Happened
The Trojans started off slow in the opening quarter of action, falling behind by as many as seven. A fast break layup from Leggett gave the Trojans a 6-2 lead with 7:21 to play, but a 14-2 run from the Panthers gave them a 16-9 advantage at the end of the opening quarter.
The start of the second quarter looked much like the first with neither side making a basket until the 6:14 mark. Down 21-17 with 3:28 to go, Koranga caught fire scoring 10 points in less than three minutes. Koranga capped off her second-quarter scoring with a layup that brought Troy back within one, 26-25, with 37 seconds to go. A make from the charity stripe for both sides and a Tina Stephens layup saw Troy up one, 28-27, at the break.
Robinson kicked off the second half with a jumper, and the Trojans did not look back. A 6-0 run for the Trojans gave Troy a 40-31 lead just before the media timeout, but Georgia State answered with 7-0 run of their own to cut the lead back to two with 4:12 to go. In a quarter full of runs, Troy answered with an 8-0 run to regain a 47-38 lead. Both sides traded buckets, sending the Trojans into the final 10 minutes of action with a 51-44 advantage.
Troy started the fourth quarter with a nine-point lead off of a Janiah Sandifer layup and never looked back. A pair of makes from the charity stripe by Robinson with 3:18 to play gave the Trojans an insurmountable 11-point lead. Georgia State's Jenae Dublin cut the deficit to 10 with laup, but one last free throw from Sharonica Hartsfield set up the 67-56 final.
Quotable – Head Coach Chanda Rigby
"We are really happy about everyone coming out to support us in our second to last game in Trojan Arena. We got off to slow start in the first quarter, but then our senior leadership took over. Jasmine Robinson keeps us even keeled, and no one was panicking. I am really proud of the way our players came off the bench ready to help rebound."
