The Trojan (4-1) offense game into the weekend finale with lightning in their bats, utilizing 12 hits to plate 16 runs. Led by four RBIs from Libby Baker, five Trojans recorded multi-RBI outings – Baker (4), Anslee Finch (3), Jade Sinness (2), Kelly Horne (2) and Logan Calhoun (2).
Purdue-Fort Wayne (0-5) plated three runs in the top of the first inning off two hits and an error, setting up the high-scoring affair.
However, the Trojans punched back with nine runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 9-3 lead and never looked back.
Troy's first six batters strung together three singles and three doubles to plate the first five runs. After Candela Figueroa drew a walk, hits from Calhoun, Horne and Baker capped off the nine-run inning.
The Mastodons continued to battle, plating a pair of runs off hits by Alyson Quinlan and Brayden Lickey.
But yet again, Troy swung back, plating six runs in the bottom half of the second frame.
Led by a base-clearing double from Baker, Troy notched the six runs off two hits and an error.
Baker (2-0) entered in relief of starter Brianna Bailey in the top of the third and picked up a strikeout to earn her second win of the week.
Troy's 16th and final run of the contest came off a long ball from Sinness in the bottom of the third.
Haley Postell checked into the circle and quickly checked out after retiring the side in just six pitches. Taylor McKinney also earned her first appearance in the circle after closing out the fifth inning for the Trojans.
Quinlan (0-1) suffered the loss for Purdue-Fort Wayne after allowing eight runs, seven hits and a walk.
Quotable – Co-Interim Head Coach Taylor Smartt
"It was a solid win to end the first weekend. It didn't start out how we would like, we made errors early and had too many freebies on defense, but we did not panic and answered back both times they scored. The offense produced top to bottom and I'm very proud of each person who contributed to help us get the win!
I am very proud of how the team handled this weekend. We bounced back after game one and continued to improve as weekend went on. The resiliency and fight that we showed is a quality that will take us far. Leanna came in and closed out the first game for us and then held Southern Illinois to just three runs in two games. Our relievers came in all weekend and really closed games out for us."
Notable
- Kelly Horne led the Trojans at the plate, batting .625 with a double, two home runs, five RBIs and nine walks over the course of the weekend.
- Troy's 16 runs scored today was the most since the Trojans set the program record after plating 25 runs against Appalachian State in 2016.
- Taylor McKinney earned her first start in the cardinal and white.
