Women’s Basketball to Start Season on The Road at Samford

TROY, Ala. – The Troy University women's basketball team will kick off its 2022-23 season with a road contest at Samford on Monday afternoon. The game sparks the first of a season-opening seven-game road trip.
Troy will enter the contest with the Bulldogs with a three-game winning streak over Samford. The Trojans are 13-10 all-time against the Birmingham foes, with the most recent game coming last December at Trojan Arena. The action saw Troy come away with a 65-61 win.
The team will be looking to capture another Sun Belt Conference championship and another ticket punched into the NCAA Tournament. Additionally, head coach Chanda Rigby enters the 2022-23 campaign just eight wins shy of 200 for her career.

The Trojans are coming off a Sun Belt Conference regular season title and a 24-win campaign. The stellar season earned the team a spot in the WNIT tournament and a meeting with SEC foe Alabama at Trojan Arena.
Troy will return just five players from last season's team, but the returning class is led by SBC preseason Player of The Year Felmas Koranga. Koranga led the Trojans in scoring and rebounding last season, averaging 12.6 points per game and 10.7 rebounds a contest.
Jashanti Simmons, a newcomer from Georgia Highlands junior college, joined Koranga on the Sun Belt's preseason release. Simmons landed on the conference's third team after receiving multiple all-American honors at Georgia Highlands.
Samford enters the season opener with much to prove after a 13-17 season a year ago. The Bulldogs finished 7-7 in the SOCON but recorded an 8-5 record at the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham.
