SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The San Francisco Dons were able to nail 13 3-pointers on Wednesday night in California to down the Troy Trojans 84-73 in a non-conference bout. It was Troy's fourth game of a seven-game road trip to begin the season.
The Trojans fall to 2-2 on the season after winning their first two games of the year against Samford and UT Martin. San Francisco, meanwhile, improves to 2-1 on the young season.
Newcomer Tai'Sheka Porchia continues to have a dominant start to her season and Troy career. The junior forward nailed 19 points against the Dons on Wednesday night to lead the team. She also pulled in seven rebounds.
After missing the last two games, Alabama transfer Nia Daniel nailed two 3-pointers en route to a 10-point night. Jada Walton was the last 10-plus point scorer for the Trojans, netting 14 points and six rebounds.
It was the San Francisco Dons who controlled play to begin the game as USF jumped out to an 11-6 lead over the Trojans in the first quarter. Points from Daniel and Mary Delgado pulled the San Francisco lead to 17-10, but a quick run from the Dons resulted in a 23-15 San Francisco lead after 10 minutes of play.
The second quarter, however, was a different story as the Trojans came out shooting the ball well in the next period. Points from Sharonica Hartsfield and Jashanti Simmons cut the USF lead to four early in the second. San Francisco maintained its four-point lead for most of the second quarter. After a 3-pointer with 48 seconds left by San Francisco, Porchia captured a jumper and a free throw to send Troy into the halftime break down by six.
An early run from the Dons in the third period saw San Francisco push its lead out to 12 with 5:30 left in the quarter. A Simmons 3-pointer brought the game back to within seven points, and that shot sparked a Troy run. After Walton was fouled attempting a 3-pointer with 39 seconds to go, the senior nailed all three charity shots to put Troy down by six after 30 minutes of play.
Another hot start to a quarter from Troy cut the lead down to three after a Ja'Mia Hollings layup with 8:33 to go. However, San Francisco would respond on its home court as the Dons would push their lead back out to 12 halfway through the frame. After a Walton layup cut the USF lead to eight, the Dons would convert their free throws to win on their home court for the second time this season.
Troy will now travel to Oahu, Hawaii, for its next two games. The Trojans will face BYU on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the North Shore Showcase looking to break their two-game skid.
