LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Troy Trojans dropped their first game of the season on Sunday afternoon after falling to UCLA 95-83 at Pauley Pavilion. It was Troy's third game of a season-opening seven-game road trip.
Troy falls to 2-1 on the year, while the UCLA Bruins improve to 3-0 after sweeping its season-opening homestand.
The Trojans played 12 different players in the loss to UCLA, while four Trojans netted double figures in points. Tai'Sheka Porchia and Makayia Hallmon led Troy in scoring with 14 points each, while Jada Walton (13) and Mary Delgado (12) registered at least 10 points.
Felmas Koranga led Troy in rebounding for the second time this season. Freshman Shaniah Nunn netted five rebounds and seven points in the game, while Ke'Ajia Williams ranked second on the team in rebounding with five as well.
Almost identically to the season-opening game against Samford, Troy surrendered the first seven points of the game to the Bruins. UCLA controlled most of the first quarter, outscoring the Trojans 24-16. Delgado, Walton, and Ja'Mia Hollings all recorded three points in the first quarter, while Gabbi Cartagena grabbed two rebounds.
The Trojans began the second quarter on fire to cut into the UCLA lead. Two baskets from Delgado and a 3-pointer from Nunn cut the Bruins' lead to just three. A quick 9-0 run from UCLA ran the score to 39-26 in favor of the Bruins, but a last-second free throw from Delgado with four seconds left had the Trojans trailing 44-36 after 20 minutes of action.
UCLA came out of the halftime break shooting the ball well and quickly pushed its lead back out to 50-38. A pair of free throws from Nunn stopped the bleeding momentarily for Troy, but the Bruins continued their offensive success in the third period and led 70-54 after the third quarter.
After scoring 31 points against UT Martin in their last game, the Trojans netted 29 points in the final quarter against UCLA on Sunday. Nunn, Delgado, and Porchia recorded the first points for Troy in the fourth, and a second-chance layup from Jashanti Simmons with 2:11 remaining cut the UCLA lead down to 17.
The layup from Simmons came in the middle of a game-ending 21-8 run for Troy. The long run, however, was not enough to displace UCLA at Pauley Pavilion, as the Trojans would drop their first game of the season and dropped the first regular season game in the state of California for Troy.
The long road trip for the Trojans will continue in their next contest as Troy will travel up the coast of California to take on the University of San Francisco. The action against USF is slated to begin Wednesday, November 16, at 8 p.m.
