TROY, Ala. – Despite allowing two goals in the final five minutes, Troy manages to secure a postseason saving point with a 3-3 tie against ULM on Sunday afternoon at the Troy Soccer Complex.
The Trojans (3-8-4, 1-5-3 SBC) gain a critical point in the tie to put them in a must-win on Thursday against James Madison. The Warhawks (10-5-3, 2-5-2 SBC) find themselves in a tie with Louisiana for the final tournament spot.
On senior day, Jordan Stack and Taytum Terrell showed out by putting one in the back of the net while Ashley Rainho punched the eventual game-tying goal.
Inge Konst kept her momentum going as Courtney Marten and Mara Grutkamp mounted the comeback for the Warhawks, with each a goal apiece.
Safety in Goals
Troy found itself down 1-0 after the first 45 minutes before exploding in the second. Senior Stack was the first to hit with the game-tying goal, 1-1, in the 50th minute off the dual assist of Halee Bradbury and Nia Wilson.
Both sides stayed silent for 19 minutes before Troy went back-to-back to propel them to 3-1. First, Terrell netted her first goal of the season on her senior day at the 69:18 mark off a corner kick assist from Gabrielle Chartier.
Four minutes later, Rainho found her opportunity, ending the senior goal streak with her second on the season. Jayla Gage found Rainho at the left side of the penalty box for the High Point transfer to punch it into the top right of the net.
The Warhawks flipped a switch with five unanswered shots to Lindsey LaRoche. Then, Marten punched in the goal after it hit off LaRoche right to her feet to bring ULM within one, 3-2. But, ULM didn't stop there as Gutkamp launched the game-tying goal from way out, 3-3, as she caught the Troy defense lacking.
Stack and Ella Owen aimed to will Troy back to victory as they quickly responded with three shots but to no avail, as both teams secured a crucial point.
Head Coach Robert Lane
"We still got something to play for. We're coming off a good display today. Really unfortunate luck with ULM's goals, but I'm really proud of how we look going forward. We're going to try and take that into Virginia. This has always been a process. And depending on whether that process ends against James Madison or at Foley, we are going to continue to build something special here at Troy."
