HARRISONBURG, Va. – After a 5-0 loss to end the regular season against James Madison, Troy women's soccer falls short of a postseason spot for the first time since 2008.
The Trojans (3-9-4, 1-6-3 SBC) ended the season last in the west division with six points, while the Dukes (10-3-5, 6-1-3 SBC) secured a top-four seed with 21 points.
Five Trojans amassed one shot on goal in the season finale in Jordan Stack, Ella Owen, Caylah Williams, Erin Bloomfield and Nia Wilson as the team goes scoreless for the seventh time this season.
The Dukes spread the wealth with five different players seizing a goal, but it was Ashby Larkin and Lexi Vanderlinden who dished off two assists apiece.
Tough Result
Troy came out of the gates knowing this was a must-win for them to enter the postseason potentially, and the team played like it in the opening minutes. In the first 13 minutes, Troy lead the game in shots, 3-1, and corner kicks, 3-0.
However, it all came crashing down for Troy as JMU nailed back-to-back goals in a seven-minute span to push its lead to 2-0 entering halftime.
The trend continued for Troy in the opening minutes of the second after Soleil Flores extended the Duke lead, 3-0, off the assist of Larkin 46:42 into the match.
Bloomfield tried to get Troy back on track with back-to-back shots as the Trojans kept JMU from letting out a shot on goal for nearly 20 minutes. Then, Hannah Young earned the easy penalty kick opportunity, which allowed her to push the lead to 4-0 at the 72:41 mark. Finally, JMU put the dagger in to end Troy's season in the 85th minute with its fifth goal
Closing Remarks from Robert Lane
"Tough way to finish this season tonight. The girls battled and just couldn't find any full chances to keep us in the match. Proud of the effort and growth this group has shown throughout the year. Credit to JMU on a quality performance. Looking forward to seeing this group take some time off, regroup, and get back to work as we trust the process laid out for us."
Season-Ending Numbers
• Jocelyn Garcia finished the game playing the entire 90 minutes against JMU, which puts her as the only non-goalkeeper to play every minute this season
