LAFAYETTE, La. – The Troy women's soccer team falls 3-1 in a pivotal match against Louisiana at the Home Bank Soccer Facility on Thursday night to drop out of a Sun Belt tournament spot.
With two matches remaining, the Trojans (3-8-3, 1-5-2 SBC) briefly fall outside the tournament race, while the Ragin Cajuns (3-7-5, 2-4-2 SBC) jump to take the final tournament spot.
Ella Owen was an offensive force for the Trojans as she attempted to will the team to victory with her first goal of the season while leading the team in shots with five.
Ruthny Mathurin put on a show for the Ragin' Cajuns, netting two goals. Alyssa Abbott joined the fun with her first goal of the season.
Faulty Five Minutes
Troy found itself down early after Mathurin netted her first goal of the match at the 11:52 mark after it slipped through the hands of Lindsey LaRoche.
The Trojans quickly responded as Owen found herself punching in the corner kick from Gabrielle Chartier 18:37 into the game to tie the match 1-1. Troy wasn't done taking their chances as the team finished the half strong to lead the shot totals, 8-3.
Once the second half started, Troy got caught on its heels in the first 11 minutes. After three unsuccessful shots by the Ragin' Cajuns, Abbott finally broke through for her first goal of the season, 2-1. Owen tried to fire back again but was met with a second goal by Mathurin to extend the Louisiana lead to 3-1.
The following 33 minutes saw the Trojans deflated as the team didn't see their first shot until 70:27 into the match, as Erin Bloomfield had her shot blocked by the Rajin' Cajuns. The Trojans could only muster two more shots in the remaining 20 minutes as the team fell 3-1.
Head Coach Robert Lane
"Tough result tonight. I was proud of the response from the girls to fight back and even things up in the first half headed into halftime. We've just got to find ways to start the second half better, and more importantly, we need to be a bit more detail-oriented on set pieces. Credit to Louisiana, who adjusted well at halftime and took advantage of their opportunities. Looking forward to being back home on Sunday for Senior Day and seeing this group respond while playing for the seniors who have done so much for this program."
