ATLANTA, Ga. – Starting with an early goal from Halee Bradbury at the three-minute mark, Troy explodes for a 3-2 victory over Georgia State to claim its first conference win of 2022 on Sunday afternoon.
The Trojans (3-5-2, 1-2-1 SBC) end a 10-match drought at the GSU Soccer Complex with the program's first win in A-Town. Meanwhile, the Panthers (5-2-5, 1-1-2 SBC) fall for the first time in conference play.
Bradbury, Melissa Kuya-Strobel and Ashley Rainho all netted their first goals of the season in the victory. Gabrielle Chartier continues to be a playmaker, dishing off her third assist of the season.
Elena Diaz and Bree Barly hit the back of the net for the Panthers as GSU had no players off the bench that produced a shot.
Rainho Provides the Necessary Cushion
Troy came out of the gates fast, netting the quickest goal of the season for the team off the right foot of Bradbury just 3:08 into the game to put Troy up 1-0 – Bradbury's first collegiate goal.
After 21 silent minutes, Diaz responded for GSU to tie the match, 1-1, with an easy penalty kick goal.
At the 57:07 mark, the Trojans exploded offensively. After two unsuccessful shots from Nia Wilson and Jordan Stack, Chartier lined up for the corner kick. Chartier let out the pass into the feet of Taytum Terrell. The junior's shot was blocked only to end up in front of Kuya-Strobel, who punched it in at the top center of the net, 2-1.
15-minutes later, the opportunity arose for Rainho after a miscommunication between the Panthers left a wide-open net. The transfer from High Point completed the easy goal for her first as a Trojan, giving Troy the two-goal cushion, 3-2.
The Panthers found the back of the net one more time at the 78:29 mark off the foot of Barley. However, the remaining 12 minutes saw Troy finish the job defensively and secure its first win over GSU since 2019.
All Smiles from Coach Lane
"Super proud of the girls and their effort this afternoon. I thought we did a great job of trying to limit the dangerous chances that Georgia State is capable of creating. Overall, we were a bit more dangerous in the final third, and credit to our group for being a bit more clinical with those chances. Again, great response, and now we're on to the next one."
Offensive Outburst
• Two Trojans scored their first career goal while dawning the cardinal and white in Bradbury and Rainho.
• Troy made the most of its opportunities, tying the Panthers in shots despite maintaining possession for just 43 percent of the match.
• The Trojans were flawless in offsides calls, finishing with zero calls for the first time this season.
• Wilson made her first start of the season against the Panthers, playing 73 minutes and letting out two shots.
Newest Foe
The Trojans look to keep the momentum going on Thursday when the team returns home to battle their newest SBC opponent in Old Dominion at 7 p.m.
