TROY, Ala. –After finding itself up 1-0 at the half, Troy fumbles over four minutes to lose 2-1 late to Texas State at the Troy Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The loss removes three potential points from the Trojans (3-7-3, 1-4-2 SBC) with three matches remaining and a four-way tie between them, Marshall, Southern Miss and Louisiana at five points for the final postseason spot – top 10 teams in points enter the tournament.
Jayla Gage gave Troy the lead heading into the locker room with her second goal of the season, while Jocelyn Garcia received her first points as a Trojan. Gage and Jordan Stack led the team with two shots, with one on goal.
Wimberly Wright and Kiara Gonzales both grabbed goals in the match to provide the victory. Olivia Wright led the Bobcats (11-2-2, 5-1-1 SBC) with three shots as the team stayed atop the west division.
Four Minute Failure
The Trojans dominated the first half over the Bobcats, outshooting them 8-2. Troy's defense held Texas State from putting out a shot until the 14thminute.
Both teams could not put one on the scoreboard until Garcia lined up for a free kick in the 43rdminute. Garcia bombed a line drive that caught Gage for a breakaway. The transfer from Chicago State throttled it to the back of the net to give Troy the lead, 1-0, heading into the locker room.
Texas State changed the tide in the second half but remained silent for most of the second half. Then, Gonzales erupted for the Bobcats, tying the match, 1-1, 83:22 into the match off after the crossbar served it up to her.
Four minutes later, Texas State took the wind out of Troy's sail when Wimberley Wright punched the game-winning goal, 2-1.
Head Coach Robert Lane
"The girls had good fight against a quality Texas State team. Credit to them for their fight. We knew they would be a difficult team to play against. We talk about the details all the time, and we just didn't do well with the second half set pieces. Fortunate first goal to have it hit the crossbar right into the feet of a player. Lindsey's a quality goalkeeper and a quality leader. She's our anchor. Jayla got caught in the right place at the right time, so credit to her for getting on the scoresheet."
