CHATTANOOGA, Tn – Cheyenne Hayes became the Trojan's all-time leader in kills in the rally-scoring era, in Troy's Saturday night 3-1 match win over Chattanooga at Maclellan Gym to wrap up the Chattanooga Classic (25-11, 25-15, 26-28, 25-17). Hayes passes Meghan Gilroy after finishing the game with seven kills and two aces. Hayes now has 1449 kills in her career and is 195 kills away from being the all-time leader in Trojan history
Troy (4-4) bounced back after an earlier loss in the day and was led by Alison Siersma, who tallied a career-high 19 kills to lead all players in the match. The 12 total blocks by the Trojans were a season-high. Troy held the Mocs to a .66 hitting percentage, the lowest by an opponent all year and the first time since 2019.
Amara Anderson was named all-tournament with 113 assists, six aces, and 32 digs over the weekend.
Chattanooga (3-6) was led by Coniah Davis, finished with eight kills, and Paige Gallentine, who recorded 12 digs. The Mocs made 27 attacking errors.
"We came out very aggressive tonight and had a good focus," head coach Josh Lauer said. "We talked about being a better serving and passing team tonight after our morning match and did a nice job in that phase of the game. I also thought our offense had a lot better flow and tempo. We had great contributions from a lot of people tonight, and the energy from our bench was fantastic."
Set One: It was all Trojans in the first set as there were only two tie scores. Lacey Jeffcoat once again got things going with back-to-back service aces. From there, the Trojans would not look back as they would go on a season-long 13-point run, stretching the lead to 21-8. The Trojans had a hitting percentage of .435, their highest on any set in the match. Hayes would finish off the set with a kill, giving the Trojans a 25-11, the lowest points allowed by Troy since Louisiana on October 12, 2019.
Set Two: The Mocs looked to keep set two closer, but Troy had none of it as Anderson added to her impressive stat line giving Troy their largest lead of set with a kill to push it 20-14. More Chattanooga errors led to a Natalie Hummel ace and Siersma adding to her kill total to finish the set 25-15.
Set Three: Chattanooga battled back multiple times in the third set as there were eight tie scores and five lead changes. Facing two set points, the Mocs were able to take advantage of a Trojan miscue and take the set with the final score of 28-26
Set Four: Trojans once again led for the majority of the fourth set. Hayes would have a hand in four straight Trojan points and record her historic kill to give the Trojans the lead. Halston Hillier would start a Trojan 5-0 run to make it 23-15, and just as she did all night, Siersma was there to finish off the match with a kill and give the Trojans the set 25-17 and the match victory.
Up Next: Troy returns home for a midweek matchup with Alabama State on Tuesday, September 14, at 6 p.m. at Trojan Arena.
