Troy Makes Quick Work of Alabama St. With Sweep

TROY, Ala. – In a match that only lasted an hour and 16 minutes, the Trojans secured their second sweep of the season Tuesday night at Trojan Arena as they defeated Alabama St. 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-22).
Troy (5-4) led the charge again with 12 kills and 10 digs, securing her third double-double of the season, a .500 hitting percentage, and three aces. In her second start of the season, Alsion Siersma recorded 11 kills, and Amara Anderson racked up 38 assists. The Trojans held the Hornets to a .160 hitting percentage. It is the Trojan's second straight game in which they have held an opponent to below a .200 hitting percentage.Alabama State (0-10) did not have a single player with double-digit kills as they were led by Alexis Ratliff and Lauren Hughes with six kills each. However, Alabama St. did out block Troy seven to three.
"It was really exciting to get back on our home court," outside hitter Cheyenne Hayes said. "We knew they were going to be a team that was going to be able to expose our bad habits. So, it was essential to us to come out and play Troy Volleyball, and sticking to our good habits was really important for us."
First Set: The first saw the Trojans hit a match-high 16 kills with a .342 hitting percentage and only record three errors. Siersma got the set started with a kill and ace, and from there, the Trojans were in control. Halston Hillier started a Troy 4-0 run, and Julia Brooks would push the lead to seven after a perfectly timed block. Savannah Poling would go on and secure the set 25-15 with a kill.
Second Set: The second set saw nine tie scores and Troy down three points, but Troy would come back to take a 10-9 lead with three straight attack errors by Alabama St. Hayes would do what she has done all year and record back-to-back aces to give the Trojans a five-point cushion of 20-15. Anderson would seal the deal 25-17 with two straight kills of her own.
Third Set: Alabama State looked to keep the match going jumping out to their largest lead of the game at 11-6. After a timeout to regroup, Natalie Hummel started the rally with an ace, and Siersma was there again with back-to-back kills to give the Trojans A 14-13 advantage. The Hornets stuck around and would eventually tie it at 20-20, but a few service errors and three straight kills by Hayes would give Troy a 25-22 set victory and a sweep of the match.
Up next: Troy will play its third SEC opponent of the season when they take on LSU in the Samford Invitational on Saturday, September 17th, followed by host Samford on September 18th.
