MOBILE, Ala. – Powered by her 10th double-digit strikeout performance of the season, Leanna Johnson blanks South Alabama to earn a crucial end of season victory Friday at Jaguar Field.
With the win, Troy (34-12, 17-5 Sun Belt) remains undefeated on the road in league play.
Leanna Johnson (19-6) came out firing on all cylinders through the first two innings of actions, fanning four of the first seven batters faced.
The Trojans then struck first in the top of the third when Kelly Horne hit an infield single that plated Katie Lively, who got on after being hit by a pitch.
After a scoreless fourth frame, Troy loaded the bases with a single and a pair of walks, but a double play got South Alabama (25-17, 12-9 Sun Belt) out of the jam.
The Jaguars threatened in bottom of the sixth with a pair of base runners and just one out, but Johnson calmly retired the next two batters to hang her sixth consecutive zero.
After a quiet top half of the seventh, a two-out walk and a wild pitch put the tying run in scoring position for South Alabama. However, in her usual fashion, Johnson fanned the final batter of the contest to secure the win.
Olivia Lackie (15-9) suffered the loss for the Jaguars after allowing one run off four hits and five walks.
QUOTABLE – Head Coach Beth Mullins
"Winning one-run ball games at the end of the year is huge! I was really proud of our grit tonight. Leanna threw a great game, our defense played great behind her and we had a timely hitting!"
