TROY, Ala. – Three Trojans garnered individual honors from the Sun Belt for their performance during the 2021 season, the league office announced Monday. Starting pitcher Garrett Gainous was named Freshman of the Year while Drew Frederic and Logan Cerny were selected to the All-Sun Belt First Team.
This marks the fourth time since Troy joined the league in 2006 that a Trojan has received Freshman of the Year honors and the first since Rigsby Mosley in 2018. Frederic, a mainstay in the Troy infield for the last five seasons, received the third All-Sun Belt postseason honor of his career and his second first team selection. This is Cerny's first league postseason honor.
Garrett Gainous - Freshman of the Year
Gainous impressed in his first season as a Trojan, recording nine wins on the mound, the most in the country by a freshman starter. The righty's 82 strikeouts in 82.1 innings led league freshman and ranked fifth overall in the conference. The Cairo, Ga., native sat down 29 batters looking, the second-most in the Sun Belt.
Gainous tallied seven quality starts and posted a 4.04 ERA during the regular season, beginning in the Saturday slot before eventually moving to Friday nights in mid-April. In his first Friday start, he allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings against Georgia State. Gainous followed that performance with his second consecutive scoreless outing behind seven strikeouts and just two walks while only allowing three hits against App State.
At one point during the season, Gainous logged a shutout streak of 16.1 innings, the longest by a Trojan since Levi Thomas in 2020.
Drew Frederic - First Team
Frederic closed out his storied career by averaging .314 and slugging .548 at the plate. He ranks third in the league with 66 hits, seventh in runs (39), fourth in home runs (11), and fifth in stolen bases (13). The speedster added 14 doubles and a triple to his impressive stat line.
Frederic opened the season by extending his career-best on-base streak to a whopping 43 games before it was eventually snapped. At one point during the season, he recorded a 14-game hit streak, which included an eight-game multi-hit streak.
The Niceville, Fla., native became Troy's all-time leader in runs, hits, doubles, at-bats and games played while also ranking inside the top 10 in triples, home runs, total bases, walks, sac-flies, and stolen bases. Frederic slots inside the top 10 among all active Division I players in games, at-bats, hits, doubles, total bases and stolen bases, and leads all active Division I players with 210 runs scored
Frederic was tabbed the No. 25 shortstop in the nation by D1Baseball last week.
Logan Cerny - First Team
Cerny entered the season with expectations of being one of the Sun Belt's most exciting players, and the center fielder delivered. He batted at a .332 clip during the regular season and led the league with a .690 slugging percentage while also registering a top-five on base percentage of .425.
In the Sun Belt, Cerny ranked second in runs (47), fourth in hits (61), third in RBIs (46), second in doubles (16), first in triples (4), second in home runs (14) and second in total bases (127). The speedster also swiped 11 bags on 13 attempts.
The Lawrenceville, Ga., native's three Sun Belt Player of the Week honors were more than any other player in the league this season. Cerny was named a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week in week one after he hit three home runs and two doubles in the Saturday contest against Youngstown State on Opening Weekend. He finished with seven RBIs and 16 total bases in the outing, which tied a school single-game record set in 1990.
Despite playing only two seasons, Cerny ranks fourth in school history with eight career triples. He was named the No. 32 outfielder in college baseball by D1Baseball last week.
