TROY, Ala. – The Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship has a new home as Troy and the rest of the league converge on the Mystic Creek Golf Club in El Dorado, Ark., for this year's championship event. The first of three rounds of stroke play is set for Sunday with the top four teams advancing to match play on Wednesday; the entire tournament will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
The Trojans will be looking for the top of its lineup to produce on a difficult course with sloped greens and a 7,181-yard track. Brent Hamm and Will McFadden have combined for 17 of Troy's 21 rounds under par this year and have 72.89 and 73.72 spring stroke averages, respectively. The pair has led the Trojans in 8-of-9 events this year and have combined for six top 10 finishes.
"We have been showing some progress led by Brent and Will throughout the spring," head coach Bart Barnes said. "We're starting to make some birdies and putting some rounds together. We've tweaked the lineup a little bit this week, and we're going to a tough golf course which is going to demand a lot from a ball-striking standpoint. We've been working hard all spring to peak at this time, and I'm seeing signs at practice that we're headed in that direction."
Hamm paced the Trojans in the regular season with nine rounds under par, including four in the 60s, and a school-record 8-under 64. He enters the Sun Belt Championship with a 0.93 score vs. par and is averaging -0.78 under par in his final rounds.
McFadden has turned in a remarkable spring season with seven rounds under par en route to his 73.72 spring average. He has a 2.12 score vs. par for the season and is second on the team with 20 of his 23 individual rounds counting towards Troy's team card.
Barnes will turn to Nicklas Borrmann in the three slot in his lineup after he has finished second on Troy's card in two of the last four events. He carries a 76.65 stroke average into the Sun Belt Championship, which is almost a stroke lower than his fall average.
George Burch could be the wild card in the lineup for Troy as the freshman has rounds of 69 and 70 on his ledger this season, while the veteran Reagan Harrell will round out Troy's five-man lineup.
"The course is going to be a severe test and the scores that are going to be successful are going to be different than what we were used to seeing at The Raven where you had to make a bunch of birdies and be aggressive," Barnes said. "Now, we're going to play a challenging golf course which places an emphasis on patience and really solid strategic golf."
