ATLANTA, Ga. – Troy fell to Georgia State in a hard-fought game Saturday afternoon at the GSU Baseball Complex. Drew Frederic and Logan Cerny both homered in the contest, but it wasn't enough as the Panthers evened the series with a 7-5 win.
Cerny sent a two-run blast over the left field wall to give the Trojans a 5-3 advantage just before the stretch, but four Panther runs in the bottom half of the inning gave Georgia State its only lead of the game at 7-5.
Frederic, a sixth-year player, played in his 223rd game as a Trojan which breaks the program record for career games previously held by Chase Smartt. The shortstop finished with one hit, a home run in the third inning, and was robbed of another hit on a spectacular diving grab by the Panther center fielder that could have sparked a ninth-inning rally.
Orlando Ortiz struck out 10 Panthers on the afternoon, one shy of tying his career high. The righty allowed three runs and left a tied ballgame before giving way to DJ Wilkinson (0-3) in the sixth inning. Matt Snell closed the game and tallied one strikeout in an inning of work.
Troy (16-17, 4-7 SBC) opened the scoring in the first inning after Logan Cerny reached via walk before stealing two bases and scoring on a wild pitch. Georgia State (9-27, 5-6 SBC) answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning and threatened again in the second, but a timely double play by the Trojans kept the game tied at 1-1.
Frederic's solo homer came in the third inning to give Troy a 2-1 lead but the Panthers, once again, had a game-tying response in the bottom of the inning.
Jesse Hall sent a two-out, RBI-double in the opposite direction to score Clay Stearns and give Troy its third lead of the game in the fourth inning. Georgia State tied the game back up in the bottom half of the fifth with a solo homer to left field.
Cerny's home run gave Troy a two-run lead in the top of the seventh before Georgia State answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Chad Treadway (1-4) logged the win for the Panthers while Duncan Lutz recorded the save.
Quotable – Head Coach Mark Smartt
"Georgia State out played us today, they swung the bats exceptionally well throughout the game. We didn't make a lot of mistakes, we didn't walk a high number of guys, we didn't have a bunch of errors, they just did a good job of swinging the bats. Give them credit, we took the lead on a big two-run homer from Cerny and they bounced right back to take the lead. We challenged in the eighth and had a base runner in the ninth but couldn't come up with the big hit."
On Drew Frederic
"It's another record fallen and he's going to get several more before his time here is done. Like I said last night, you kind of run out of accolades for a player of his stature. I'm really proud of all he's accomplished and for him to break this record certainly speaks to his career and the success he's had wearing our uniform."
