TROY, Ala. – Troy dropped the series finale to Tulane Sunday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field. The Green Wave used a hot start and a strong finish to clinch the rubber match in the series, 14-2.
Jesse Hall shined in his third career start despite the loss, making several impressive defensive plays alongside a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Ryan Pettys had a great outing in relief of Bay Witcher, throwing three scoreless innings and striking out one.
Tulane (8-7) got on the board first with two runs on four hits, three of which came with two outs, in the opening frame. Rigsby Mosley reached on a leadoff walk in his first at-bat and stole second, his second swiped bag on the year in as many attempts, but was left stranded.
A pair of errors allowed two unearned runs to cross for the Green Wave in the second before an RBI-double to left-center field plated another in the third, giving Tulane an early 5-0 lead.
Aided by a leadoff double from Clay Stearns, Troy (8-8) loaded the bases in the bottom half of the third, allowing Dalton Sinquefield to hit a sac-fly to score the Trojans' first run of the game.
Tulane threatened in the sixth with runners on second and third with one out, but a spectacular diving grab by Jesse Hall and a Pettys strikeout ended the trouble.
The Green Wave regained a five-run lead before the stretch on a solo homer by Frankie Niemann. Tulane plated three more runs in the eighth to take a commanding 9-1 lead.
Troy got the bats working in the bottom half of eighth after Hall led off with an infield single. A base running mistake by the Trojans prevented Troy from having the bases loaded with one out. Instead, with runners on the corners and two outs, Sinquefield dribbled an infield single for his second RBI of the day.
Tulane would add five more runs in the ninth to make the final score, 14-2.
Witcher (2-1) suffered his first loss of the year on the mound for Troy after lasting three innings. In total, seven Trojan arms were used in the contest.
Jack Aldrich (1-0) tossed 7.2 innings and allowed one earned run on eight hits in the win for Tulane.
Quotable – Head coach Mark Smartt
"Give Tulane credit, they outplayed us today. They scored early in the game, all with two outs, so that's a credit to them. Bay [Witcher] threw quality stuff, he didn't pitch badly, they just found ways to get those runs across and then we had a couple errors that cost us two runs. The two bright spots today were Jesse Hall and Ryan Pettys, both had great games and I'm proud of those two guys. We've got a tough schedule; we can't feel bad for ourselves. We have to pick ourselves up and get back to work to try and get better."
