Troy enters league play ranking in the top four in the Sun Belt in batting average, ERA and fielding percentage.
The Troy bats began to show signs of life last weekend against Tulane. The Trojans exploded for 12 runs on a season-high 17 hits in the Saturday contest against the Green Wave. Troy is once again one of the best doubles-hitting teams in the nation in 2021, ranking seventh nationally with 36 two-baggers on the year.
Caleb Bartolero, who had four hits on the year entering Saturday's game against Tulane, doubled his season hit total with a 4-for-4, three-RBI day at the plate and hit a double and a home run in the same inning.
Rigsby Mosley appeared back to his normal self last week, minus the mullet. Since getting his hair cut early last week, Mosley is 8-for-16 (.500) with two doubles, a stolen base and has scored three runs. Drew Frederic has reached base in every game this year and is riding a 25-game reached-base streak dating back to 2020. The sixth-year senior is also riding a nine-game hitting streak, closing in on his career-best mark of 11 games.
On the mound, Orlando Ortiz (28) and Garrett Gainous (26) rank first and second, respectively, in the Sun Belt in strikeouts this season. Gainous has sat 'em down looking a league-best 11 times this year. Sunday starter Bay Witcher's 2.86 ERA is tied for the ninth-best in the Sun Belt.
Troy and Georgia Southern were set to open Sun Belt play against each other in 2020, but the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Trojans were halfway to Statesboro before turning back around after receiving the news. It will have been 671 days between Troy's last SBC series and Friday's series opener against the Eagles, and 678 days since the Trojans' last home Sun Belt contest.
