Troy’s Field Performers, Distance Runners Shine at Jaguar Invitational

MOBILE, Ala. – Led by its field performers and the distance runners, the Troy track and field program continued its strong spring Friday at the Jaguar Invitational hosted by South Alabama.
In the meet, the Trojan women finished second (142.5) overall while the men finished in third (109) behind the host Jaguars (137.5) and Southeastern Louisiana (147). The Jaguars took home the women's team title finishing with a meet-high team score of 158.
Highlights for the Troy women included Jade Johnson (12.02m) winning the triple jump, Maja Kuessner winning the high jump (1.74m) and Gemma Finch finishing with the fastest time (2:11.53) in the women's 800m. Finch continued to shine in the distance events, finishing second (4:32.68) in the women's 1500m. The senior finished just two-tenths of a second behind Carli Knott of Southeastern Missouri.
Other top performances on the women's side included senior Alexis Garrett (14.43) and Ines Garcia (14.49) and Johnson (14.63) finishing second, third and fourth respectively in the 100m hurdles and Kasia Cooper finishing second in the women's 400m. Cooper's time of 57.02 seconds was just under a tenth-of-a-second behind the top time in the event.
On the men's side, Blake Vaughn continued his strong beginning to the 2021 outdoor season finishing second (9:52.47) in the men's 300m steeple. Other highlights for the Trojan men included Michael Alvernaz and Connor Brookman finishing first (64.17m) and third (57.57m) in the men's hammer event, and Titus Sizemore finishing with the top score in the high jump (2.09m). Jordan Wallace also had a good day, finishing with the top-score in the men's triple jump (14.52m).
Shot put specialist Austin Snyder also had a strong day for the men of Troy, finishing with the second-best score in the shotput (17.47m), finishing just a third of a meter behind the top score. Snyder followed his second-place finish in the shotput with a fourth-place finish (48.77m) in the discus.
Troy returns to action next Friday (Mar. 19) and Saturday (Mar. 20) for the Tiger Track Classic hosted by Auburn University.
