Robinson's Career Night Not Enough as Troy Falls at Georgia Southern
2/5/2021 8:40:00 PM | Basketball (W)
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Troy women's basketball team had its Sun Belt best, seven-game winning streak snapped Friday night inside Hanner Field at the hands of Georgia Southern, 91-96. Jasmine Robinson had a career-high 33-points in the contest.
Troy (11-5, 7-2 SBC) fell to Georgia Southern (8-8, 4-5 SBC) for the first time in 17 games, snapping a streak that started back in 1978. The Trojans played well offensively, surpassing 90 points for fifth time this season while also shooting 48 percent from the field and 40 percent for three. The Eagles scored 96 points, second-most this season, on 51 percent shooting from the floor and 57 percent shooting from behind-the-arc. Both shooting percentages were the second-best percentages GS has shot in a game this season.
"It was a tough game," head coach Chanda Rigby said. "Going in we said we had to be 15-20 points better than somebody to win on the road and we definitely were in the first-half but we didn't play that well in the second-half. If you play that way you're not going to get the win. We have to play better in both halves."
How It Happened
In the first quarter Troy looked like the team that had just won four straight games by at least 20 points. The Trojans were firing on all cylinders, shooting over 66 percent from the field and 80 percent from three on 4-of-5 shooting. A big part of the first quarter success was Tiyah Johnson who scored 12 of her 17 points in the quarter.
After the opening frame everything began to go Georgia Southern's way. The Eagles opened the second quarter on a 10-4 run, cutting the Trojan's 14-point lead to single digits. Troy seemed to find it's barring after weathering the opening quarter run, outscoring the Eagles 15-11 the rest of the way and going into the break with a 13-point lead.
Although the first half belong to Troy, the second half belonged to Georgia Southern. The Eagles blitzed Troy out of the gate, using a 17-3 run to take a 56-55 lead, their first lead since 3-2 in the first minutes of the game.
With all the momentum on Georgia Southern's side, Troy senior Jasmine Robinson did everything she could to will the Trojans to victory. She scored 12 straight points after GS's big run and 21 points by herself in the second half.
Troy led by one entering the fourth but a triple from Eden Johnson, Georgia Southern's leading scorer with 20, to open the fourth gave the Eagles a two-point edge that they didn't give up the rest of the way. They took a 12-point lead, their largest of the game, with just under four to play. Troy was able to cut that deficit to four but that was it, as they fell 91-96 for just their second loss in Sun Belt play this season.
Who Stood Out
Jasmine Robinson had a career night for Troy on Friday with a career-high 33 points on 13-of-18 shooting from the field and 6-of-9 from the behind-the-arc. Her 33-points are the most scored by a Sun Belt player this season and the third time a Trojan has scored at least 30 in a game this season. Robinson added three assists, three steals and two rebounds to her totals.
