Women's Basketball Starts Long Week With Win Over Georgia State
2/16/2021 4:28:00 PM | Basketball (W)
ATLANTA – On a frigid day in Atlanta, the Troy women's basketball team remained hot with its fourth straight win and 15th of the season. The Trojans defeated Georgia State 91-70 in the first of three meetings this week between the two programs.
Troy (15-5, 11-2 SBC) reached the 90-point mark for the seventh time this season in its victory at Georgia State (10-8, 6-5 SBC). The Trojans were led on Tuesday by a pair of seniors in Tyasia Moore and Janiah Sandifer. Moore, who got off to a red-hot start, ended the day with her second career double-double, second of the season, with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. Sandifer added 19 points, fourth time this season with at least 19, on 4-of-6 shooting including a 3-for-5 night from behind-the-arc. 15 of Sandifer's 19 came in the second half.
On an afternoon where neither team could really settle into a rhythm due to multiple stoppages of play, 50 combined called fouls, the Trojans still managed to shoot 46 percent from the field on 30-of-65 shooting and 79 percent from the charity stripe, 27-for-34. Georgia State shot just under 45 percent on 28-of-64 shooting. The Panthers were led by Taylor Hosendove and Elexus Bell who each had a team-high 15 points.
"Really big thanks for Coach Neil Harrow and his scout. He really prepared the team in a short amount of time," head coach Chanda Rigby said. "The team really understood the game plan. Georgia State did a great job. Their game plan was to go inside with their bigger and stronger post players and they were really making us think hard about making some adjustments. But in the fourth quarter we challenged the post players to hold their ground in they did that to help us seal the game."
How It Happened
The Trojans got things going right off the bat, winning the opening tip and turning it into two quick points from Alexus Dye, who scored her only two points in the first half after getting into early foul trouble. After Georgia State picked up back-to-back buckets to take an early 4-2 lead, Troy took it right back with seven straight points and never looked back.
After outscoring Georgia State 23-18 in the first, Troy extended its lead to 11 after the second frame. The Panthers scored the first two points of the third quarter, but much like the first Troy went on a little 6-0 run to extend its lead to double-digits. The Trojans kept the intensity high, only allowing GSU to get within eight points the rest of the game.
The Trojans were dominant in the final quarter, outscoring Georgia State 26-17, highlighted by nine points from Sandifer and six from Moore. With the dominate fourth Troy was able to secure its largest lead of the afternoon, 21-points, on two Moore free throws with under 30 seconds to play. Troy's 21 point victory over Georgia State was its largest since beating the Panthers 111-90 back on Feb. 15, 2014. It was also the largest road win over GSU in program history, previous high was 18 back on Jan. 5, 2017.
Who Stood Out
Tyasia Moore was big for the Trojans on Tuesday as she earned her second double-double of the season. Moore scored a game-high 20 on 7-of-13 shooting while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Moore added an assist to her impressive stat line on Tuesday.
Quoting Coach Rigby
On so many players that can score
"Alexus Dye is a coach's dream. But it's even more of a coach's dream that you can have so many other players step in night-after-night and contribute in big ways and play and help us win ball games."
On Tyasia Moore's double-double
"I really think she's one of the most explosive players in the Sun Belt but I'm really proud that she is toughening up on the defensive side and also getting rebounds as well. A double-double out of her means a lot to us and it means she is doing whatever it takes to get the win."
