Troy Opens 2021 Season in Trojan Classic; Schedule Altered

TROY, Ala. – The Troy softball team opens the 2021 season playing host to Ole Miss, UAB and Belmont in the Trojan Classic this weekend at the Troy Softball Complex. Due to the threat of inclement weather, Chattanooga withdrew from the tournament altering the full tournament schedule.

The Trojans will now open play on Friday at 11:30 a.m. against regional SEC foe Ole Miss followed by a 2 p.m. matchup with in-state rival UAB.

Saturday and Sunday's schedule will be announced at a later time.

Troy looks to build upon a promising start to the 2020 season. Head coach Beth Mullins returns a powerful offense that includes 98% of the team's hits, 100% of their doubles and 98% of their RBIs.

The Trojans also return their entire pitching staff. At the helm is reigning Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Sun Belt member Leanna Johnson.

Johnson led the Sun Belt in seven of the 11 major pitching categories in 2020, including strikeouts (137), shutouts (7), wins (11), and opposing batting average (.153). The sophomore also led the nation in shutouts, ranked sixth in strikeouts, sixth in victories and ninth in saves.

Ole Miss begins their season at the Trojan Classic after going 12-13 a year ago. The Rebels were a 2019 Super Regional defeating Chattanooga, Louisiana and Southeast Missouri in the Oxford Regional. Ole Miss leads the all-time series, 2-1.
UAB checks into the Troy Softball Complex after a 15-11 season in 2020 with wins over Georgia Tech and in-state foe North Alabama. Troy leads the overall series with the Blazers, 17-12.
Belmont travels to Troy to participate in the Trojan Classic after posting a 5-14 record in the shortened season a year ago. The Trojans and Bruins have squared off 22 times with Troy leading the all-time series, 19-3.
