THE WEEK THAT WAS (TROY, 8-9): The Troy Trojans enter Tuesday's mid-week matchup after earning the season series and a weekend sweep against Appalachian State. In Friday's 71-62 wire-to-wire victory, the Trojans held the Mountaineers to just 2-of-19 shooting from deep including just 1-for-12 in the second period of action. In the victory, the Trojans used a pair of career-best performances from Nick Stampley and Duke Miles. Stampley scored 23 points (a new career best) and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Miles scored 17 points and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. On Saturday, the Trojans received another strong outing from Stampley (19 points, 7 rebounds) and Kam Woods (12 points, 6 assists). Woods' six assists were a new career-best.
THE WEEK THAT WAS (Spring Hill College, 0-0): The Spring Hill College Badgers play their first game of the season on Tuesday night. After seeing its 2020-21 non-conference and SIAC conference schedule canceled due to COVID-19, the Badgers recently decided to resume basketball activities pursuing a 10-game competitive schedule and the exhibition Tuesday night against the Trojans. Following Tuesday's matchup, Spring Hill will next hit the hardwood this Saturday and Sunday for a pair of home dates with Miles College. A season ago, the Badgers went 8-21 and 7-12 in SIAC play. They scored 74.6 points a game and lost their top five scorers from a season ago. Auburn HS product Christian Brandt is the top-returner for the Badgers, having scored 9.1 points a game last season. Brandt hit 47 total 3-pointers, the second most on the Badgers squad. In the offseason, the Badgers did add D-I transfer Christian Scott who transferred to Spring Hill from Elon University.
HOME COOKIN'
Troy opened its five-game homestand in style this past weekend earning the weekend sweep of the Mountaineers. On Friday, Troy held on for a wire-to-wire 71-62 victory before taking the series finale 65-59 on Saturday. With the victory, Troy extended its home winning streak to five. Troy's last five-game winning streak was during the 2013-14 season when Troy defeated LaGrange (Nov. 11), Nicholls (Nov. 19), Alcorn St (Dec. 2), Alabama St (Dec. 7) and Bellhaven (Dec. 28). The five-game homestand is the longest homestand in Troy's D-I history and the longest since the 1993-94 season when Troy also played five straight home games (Jan. 22-31).
D-I HistoRY ON THE LINE!
With a victory tonight over Spring Hill, the Trojans would start the season 6-0 inside Trojan Arena. The 6-0 start would be the first in Troy's D-I history, and would be the Trojans best home start since 1992-93 when Troy went a perfect 13-0 at home en route to an appearance in the 1993 D-II National Championship game. The 6-0 start would tie the 2019-20 Troy women's program for the best start inside Trojan Arena.
CHANGES TO THE SCHEDULE
Troy has made three changes to its 2020-21 schedule, Troy Athletics, Scott Cross and the Sun Belt Conference announced this week. Troy's Jan. 8 home game against Georgia State has been moved to Feb. 16, and the originally scheduled Jan. 9 game has been CANCELED. In order to get 27 games back on the schedule, the Trojans have added a game on Tuesday against Spring Hill College at Trojan Arena. Tip-off from Trojan Arena is set for 6 p.m.
INTO THE WOODS
Freshman Kam Woods has been sensational so far this season. The Bessemer, Ala. product currently leads the 2020-21 Trojans roster in points (12.1), 3-pointers made (27) and total points scored (206). The freshman currently leads the Sun Belt in points among freshman and has scored at least 20 points in three of his last six. Woods has four total 20 point games.
LOCK DOWN DEFENSE
Troy held App State to just two-of-19 shooting from behind the 3-point arc on Friday night. The two made 3-pointers are the fewest Troy has given up in a game since Coastal Carolina made just 2-of-17 on Mar. 9, 2019. App's 10.5 percent shooting from behind the arc is the worst since Brewton-Parker shot 1-of-17 (5.9 percent) back on Nov. 14, 2014.
ZAY DAY!
Junior Zay Williams recorded another strong performance last Friday night scoring 16 points to go with 12 rebounds. The double-double was his third this season, and his fourth career. Williams followed up his strong performance last Friday night with another strong performance last Saturday, scoring 8 points and tying his career best rebound output (13). The forward is averaging 11.5 points and 8.0 rebounds overall. The 8.0 rebounds are the seventh most in the Sun Belt this season, and his 5.9 defensive rebounds per game are the fourth most in the SBC.
ROARING WATERS
Senior Khalyl Waters continues to impress this season. The combo guard is averaging 8.3 points a game and is shooting an impressive 52-of-57 (91.2%) percent from the line. His 91.2 percent mark is currently ranked 11th in the entire NCAA (min. 40 attempts). Waters has recorded at least 20 points twice this season. Waters scored a career-best 21 against Samford on Dec. 16. Waters scored 12 points, grabbed nine boards and had a career-best four steals last night.
DEFENSE HAS LED TO WINS
The Trojans were 7-1 last season when they held teams to 65 points or fewer. Troy's lone loss when holding a team below that mark was at Texas A&M (56-52, loss). The Trojans were also 8-1 last season when holding an opponent to less than 40 percent shooting. Troy's win over Samford is the first time that Troy won when a team shot better than 40 percent from the field and scored more than 65 (1-3). So far this season Troy is 7-1 when holding a team below 65 points and 7-1 when holding teams to 40 percent shooting or less.
REP THE 'T'
Head coach Scott Cross preaches the mantra that the toughest team always wins. So far this season Troy has taken 47 total charges in 17 games. The Trojans took three charges last night and have taken at least two charges in every game except the UNCW game where they failed to take one and last night. Troy took 80 charges in 31 games a season ago. Nick Stampley took 32 of those 80 (40 percent).
With a victory, the Trojans (8-9) would get back to .500 on the season and would start 6-0 at home for the first time in the Trojans D-I history.
Following the mid-week matchup with the Badgers, Troy will close out its longest homestand since the 1993-94 season (also five-games) this weekend with a pair of matchups against the Georgia Southern Eagles. Tip-off from Trojan Arena is set for 6 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday.
