Troy Lands SMU Transfer Sam Walters

TROY, Ala. - SMU transfer Sam Walters has signed with Troy men's basketball, head coach Adam Howard announced Wednesday.Â
A 6'9" forward, Walters has spent his collegiate career at three Power Four programs, playing in 84 games while averaging 4.5 points and shooting 37.6% on 3-point attempts.Â

"Sam has competed at the highest level of college basketball and brings invaluable experience from programs that know what it takes to win in March. He is a proven perimeter shooter who stretches the floor and has tremendous versatility. As a staff, we're excited to have the opportunity to work with Sam and help him maximize his potential."Â
Walters appeared in 24 games for the Mustangs during the 2025-26 season, averaging 2.6 points and 1.0 rebounds.Â
Prior to SMU, Walters appeared in 23 games at Michigan before missing the final 14 contests of the season due to injury. He averaged 5.0 points per game while shooting 36.6 percent from three.Â
Walters began his collegiate career at Alabama, appearing in all 37 games for the Crimson Tide during their run to the 2024 Final Four. He averaged 5.4 points and 2.4 rebounds while scoring in double figures seven times.Â
Walters scored a career-high 16 points against South Alabama, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 3-for-3 from 3-point range.Â
A former consensus top-100 recruit, Walters was ranked as high as No. 51 nationally by Rivals. He attended Village Charter School for three seasons after spending his sophomore year at Montverde Academy. At Village Charter, Walters scored 1,598 career points (18.2 ppg) and grabbed 711 rebounds (8.1 rpg), helping lead the program to three 20-win seasons and a 65-24 record.Â
During his sophomore year at Montverde, Walters helped the Eagles post a 24-1 record and capture their second consecutive GEICO Nationals championship while finishing as the nation's No. 1-ranked prep team.Â
