Jonesboro, Ark. – A back and forth match saw Troy fall to Arkansas St. Saturday night from the First National Bank Arena in five sets (30-28, 21-25, 25-21, 18-25, 7-15).
"I was really proud of our effort tonight," head coach Josh Lauer said. "Arkansas State executed well in sets 4 and 5, and that was a big difference in the match. There is a lot we can learn from this weekend. After the match tonight, our team had excellent perspective, so I'm looking forward to getting back to practice and beginning our preparations for another critical set of matches on the road next weekend."
Troy (9-6, 2-2) was again led by a trio of Trojan's recording double-digit kills for the second straight night as Julia Brooks tied her season-high with 18 kills, followed by Cheyenne Hayes with 17 and Alison Siersma with 10. Amara Anderson secured her second straight double-double with 45 assists and 14 digs. Lacey Jeffcoat had a season-high 28 digs. Troy had 48 attack errors, the most of any match this season.
Elise Wilcox led Arkansas St. (11-5, 2-2) with 15 kills, and Tatum Ticknor had a game-high 33 digs. The Red Wolves recorded 22 blocks which were 10 more than Troy.
Set One: The first set saw a slight separation between the two teams as there were 13 tie scores and 10 lead changes. The 17 kills in the set were the most of the match for the Trojans, with Brooks and Hayes recording six apiece. Siersma's third service ace would give the Trojans their second set point, but Arkansas St. kept the set alive, capitalizing on attacking errors by the Trojans. Finally, Hayes would close the set herself with two straight kills to give Troy the win 30-28.
Set Two: Troy would have to battle back multiple times as they got done as much as four. Troy would see contributions from Savannah Poling and Ashley Guenveur, but the team hitting percent of .089 hurt the comeback cause and would see Arkansas St. even things at one set apiece.
Set Three: 10 tie scores saw another even set throughout. Amara Anderson had 10 assists while Arkansas St. as a team only had nine. However, Trojans were able to rally late and go on a four-point run with two Hayes kills to seal the deal and give Troy a 2-1 set advantage.
Set Four: Arkansas St. took the lead and didn't give it up once in the fourth set. Troy hit a match, and season-low .024 as the Red Wolves out blocked Troy five to two in the set to go on and send the match to a fifth and decisive set.
Set Five: Troy jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but four straight points from Arkansas St. was enough to turn the momentum. An unsuccessful challenge from Troy that would have tied the set sparked another Arkansas St. run, putting the set out of reach and give the Red Wolves the match win.
Up Next: The Trojans will continue their road trip next weekend, taking on Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina.
