BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team kicked off the 2021 season in style on Thursday, earning a hard fought, come from behind victory over in-state rival Samford, 4-3. The win moves the Trojans to 1-0 on the season while Samford falls to 0-4.

After losing the all-important doubles point, Troy found its self-backed against a wall and needing to win four of the six singles points to win the match. After falling on court three, Troy was able to grab its first lead of the match at 3-2 with wins from Pelayo Antuna on court one, Carlos Anton on court two and Vito Llinares on court four. After Samford tied the match, all eyes turned to court six.

The maturity of a seasoned veteran was on full display on court six for the Trojans as Christopher Tasker entered the evening not expecting to play singles but answered the bell when his number was called. Having the weight of his team on his back, the red shirt junior from Weston, Fla. came through in a big way, earning the two-set victory and giving his team its first win of the young season.
