TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team opened its home schedule on Saturday with a pair of matches against AUM. Troy earned the doubleheader sweep with its 7-0 victory in match one before closing out the weekend with a 5-2 decision in match two. The weekend sweep improved Troy to 3-0 on the season.
The Trojans got the day started with an impressive showing in doubles, earning the point for the first time this season thanks in part to the duo of Pelayo Antuna and Carles Anton winning their 15th career doubles match together as well as the duo of Amer Bedwan and Vito Llinares earning their second doubles match victory of the season.
With the early advantage in the match, thanks to winning the doubles point, Troy wasted little time jumping on the Warhawks once singles play got underway. All six singles matches were won in just two sets and only in one match did AUM score more than three points. Both Anton and Nicolas Simkin won a set without dropping a point.
In the second match of the doubleheader Troy lost the doubles point but the pair of Antuna and Anton earned a 6-2 decision at the No. 2 spot for their 16th career doubles win, and their 10th when playing on court two.
The Trojan shook up the lineup in singles action with Bedwan, Lilnares, Simkin and Tasker all moving up a court and Nicolas Rodriquez making his Troy debut. Much like the in the first, Troy set the tone early. The Trojans were able to win the first set in five of the six matches, while surrendering no more than four points before closing the door on the Warhawks with straight set wins on courts one through five.
Troy will be back in action next Saturday, Jan. 30 when they host Point University for a double header.
