TROY, Ala. – For the first time since March 6 of last year, the Troy men's tennis team will hit the courts for a dual match. The Trojans will open the 2021 season on Thursday at 2 p.m. when they travel to Birmingham to take on Samford.
Â
Although this will be Troy's first match of the season, Samford enters Thursday's match with an 0-3 record. Two of their losses came at the hands of Alabama while one was against Auburn.
Â
Coming off an impressive 11-4 season a year ago that was cut short due to the Corona Virus, head coach Rolando Vargas and the Trojans will open the new campaign with an impressive roster that features one senior, six juniors a sophomore and six freshmen.
Â
Highlighting the impressive roster will be Troy's top two players from last season in Carles Anton and Pelayo Antuna. Anton, who retained freshman eligibility due to the shortened season, led the Sun Belt last season with an .864 winning percentage (19-4) while also tying with former Trojan star Oskar Michalek for the best dual singles record in the conference (14-1). Anton's strong play earned him SBC Player of the Week honors on Feb. 26 and with the honor became the first Trojan since to earn that award since the 2016 season.
Â
Antuna was equally impressive last season, posting a 15-7 overall record with an 8-4 record at No. 1 singles while going 14-1 in doubles, all with Anton. The pairs impressive doubles record was the best in the SBC. Antuna was finding his groove before the season got cut short, winning his final three matches of the year and was named the Sun Belt Player of the Week on March 4.
Â
Also returning for Troy will be Vito Llinares, who finished third in dual match singles wins with 12, Christopher Tasker, Manuel Bernard, Antonio Selma, Andy Romero, Jorge Poyatos and Amer Bedwan.
Â
The Trojan's impressive returning squad will be pushed to its limits as Troy brings in one of the more talented recruiting classes in the Sun Belt. Vargas added depth to his roster with the addition of Joaquin Bianchi, Francisco Erramuspe, Nicolas Rodriguez and Nicolas Simkin.
Â
Following its season opening match on Thursday, Troy will play its first match of the season in the friendly confines of the Lunsford Tennis Complex. The Trojans will host AUM for two matches on Saturday. The first match against the Warhawks will begin at 10 a.m. followed by a second match at 1 p.m.
