Four Trojans Set School Records at Blazer Invite
1/15/2021 9:42:00 PM | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Three Trojans broke school records at the Blazer Invite, Troy's first indoor meet of the season, Friday afternoon at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Maja Kuessner (high jump), Edita Sklenska (600m), Kasia Cooper (500m) and Austin Snyder (shot put) all set program-best marks.
"Our kids competing showed heart today," director Marc Davis said. "We had three school records on the day. The records broken were strong records, so we are trending in the right direction and I look forward to getting back at it next week."
Troy finished the day with 14 podium finishes in 11 different events.
On the women's side, Jade Johnson (11.84m) and Amber Gordon (11.47m) finished first and second, respectively, in the triple jump. Kuessner's school record 1.75m leap in the high jump gave her second place in the event.
Sklenska's 1:32.05 second finish in the 600m gave her silver in the event, missing gold by less than two seconds. Troy had a strong showing with two runners inside the top three in the mile. Cadi Rowe (5:05.26) took second while Lauren Locke (5:05.95) finished just behind her in third.
Troy's 4x800 relay finished in first, nearly two seconds ahead of the UAB's squad.
On the men's side, Snyder's school record toss of 16.86 in the shot put highlighted the field events.
Sage Delfino had a strong day with podium finishes in the 1000m (2:46.28, 2nd) and the mile (4:38.07,3rd). Two Trojans finished on the podium in the 600m as Reuben Dotson (1:21.93) took second while Chance Armstrong (1:22.19) placed third.
"Overall, we had an up and down day," Davis said. "However, it goes without saying many of our downs were based on fallout from 10 months of no competition and setbacks due to Covid-19. At the end of the day, the important part of the meet was to figure out where we were fitness wise, and for the most part we were where we should be."
Troy returns to action at the Samford Multi Thursday, Jan. 21 and the Samford Invite Friday, Jan. 22 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
