TROY, Ala. -- The two-time defending Alabama Class 6A Player of the Year is heading to Troy this fall, as Pinson Valley standout Kameron "Kam" Woods has signed his National Letter of Intent head coach Scott Cross announced Friday morning.
Â
The 2018 Alabama Class 3A Player of the Year at Midfield high school, Woods spent the last two seasons at Pinson Valley high school where he led the Indians to the 2019 Alabama Class 6A title a year ago, before losing an overtime heartbreaker in the quarterfinals this season (76-74). Woods was named the Alabama 6A Player of the Year three times.
Â
"Kam is 6'1" point guard that plays for Coach Darrell Barber of Pinson Valley High School in Birmingham," Cross said. "Kam helped Pinson Valley win a state championship last season but lost in the state quarterfinals this season. Kam reminds me so much of one my former players, Erick Neal. Kam has the ball on a string, is an amazing finisher and is one of the best overall scorers that I have ever seen. He will bring instant offense and a ton of excitement to Trojan Arena this season!"
Â
Woods joins Duke Miles, Rory Pantophlet, Kieffer Punter and Christian Turner who all signed their NLIs earlier in the week.
Â
"I think we have addressed every need for our basketball team with this outstanding group of players, head coach Scott Cross said. "My staff worked extremely hard to recruit this great group of guys. Our recruiting class is as strong as any class that we have signed in my 13 years of being a head coach. We wanted to sign "Winners," and I believe that we knocked it out of the park! All five players come from "WINNING" programs. Not just good programs, but great programs! The number of district, state, and conference championships that this group has won is mind blowing when you take a minute to think about it. This recruiting class is special, and I believe that they will help us win a championship here at Troy in the very near future."
Â
The seventh-leading scorer in the country, Woods averaged a staggering 38.1 points this season, earning his third consecutive Alabama Sports Writers Association Player of the Year recognition. A three-time ASWA Player of the Year selection, Woods was named the 6A Player of the year back in 2019, after earning the 2018 3A Player of the Year at Midfield.
Â
Turning in one of the most impressive state tournament performances in recent memory, Woods exploded for 41 total points in the Indians regional semifinal victory against Oxford. Woods scored 36 of his 41 in the second half, including a stretch of 31 consecutive points in the third and fourth periods.
Â
The guard scored nearly 4,000 (3,781) career points and hit an impressive 147 3-pointers in 2019-20. For his career, Woods reached the 40-point threshold 10 times and recorded 50 contests with at least three 3-pointers.Â
