TROY, Ala. – Troy improved to 3-0 on the year and secured a series victory over Northern Kentucky after defeating the Norse 17-3 and 12-2 in a doubleheader Saturday at Riddle-Pace Field. The Trojans now rank fourth in Division I in runs per game, averaging 15.7 through the first two days of the season.
Caleb Bartolero hit a grand slam and registered a career-high six RBIs as Troy cruised to a victory in the first game of the day while Taylor Pridgen hit his first career home run in game two, a 371 ft. bomb over the right field wall.
Game One – Troy 17, NKU 3
The Troy bats stayed hot in a 17-3 route of Northern Kentucky (0-3) in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. The Trojans recorded 11 hits and were walked 15 times, the most since 2016 when 13 batters reached bases on balls against Samford. Orlando Ortiz pitch six scoreless innings and struck out seven batters in his first win as a Trojan.
Bartolero got the scoring started in the first inning with a 361 ft. grand slam that left the bat at 101.3 mph. A flurry of walks and single from Drew Frederic pushed four runs across the plate in the second inning. The Trojans added two more in the third, aided by an Easton Kirk single to right field to score Rigsby Mosley.
Troy's highest scoring inning of the day came in the bottom of the fourth. After Austin Garofalo and Hunter Mercer reached base, Mosley roped a ball down the first base line to bring them home. Frederic then hit his second double of the weekend to bring Mosley home for the third time in the game. The next at-bat, Dalton Sinquefield launched a ball 333 ft. over the right field wall, scoring two more.
Troy tacked on two more in the sixth, bringing its run total to 35 through the first two games, the most the Trojans have scored in back-to-back games since 2013 (33 vs. FAMU). Trojan pitchers held Northern Kentucky scoreless until the final inning when the Norse registered four of their five hits and scored three runs.
Quotable – Head Coach Mark Smartt
"We knew [Orlando] could pitch. He pitched a great game today in his first outing as a Trojan. We taxed him a little bit towards the end, but he made adjustments to get the outs. We got to see him work when he was fatigued so that was valuable."

Game Two – Troy 12, NKU 2
For the first time in the series, Troy didn't score a run in the first inning, but eventually found its groove and surpassed the 10-run threshold for the third straight game. Max Newton earned the win on the mound for the Trojans and improved to 8-5 in his career. The senior southpaw struck out three batters in five innings of work.
Six Trojans posted at least two hits, including Sinquefield, who went 2-4 and tied a career high with three runs.
Northern Kentucky struck first in the top of the second, but Troy quickly drew even in the bottom half of the inning when William Sullivan chopped a blooper to second, bringing home Kirk. The Trojans put three runs on the board in both the third and fourth innings, as well as one in the seventh.
Troy opened up the game with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, capped by Pridgen's monster three-run home run over the right field wall in just the fourth at-bat of his career.
Quotable – Head Coach Mark Smartt
"Max Newton was great in the starting role and the bullpen looked good. We did some great things with the bat today and we ran the bases really well. I'm really proud of the start we've had, but we're back to work tomorrow with the first Sunday of the season."
