CONWAY, S.C. – In a loud and hostile environment Thursday night the Trojans 7-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of a hot shooting Coastal Carolina team, 101-124. The loss brings the two programs into a tie for first-place in the Sun Belt Standings, with identical 10-2 conference records.
Troy had a decent day shooting from the field posting a shooting percentage of just under 40 percent while Coastal Carolina had its second-best offensive output of the season against a Division 1 opponent, shooting just under 50 percent and 52 percent from three, its highest 3-point percentage since Nov. 25, 2018 when shooting at least 19 threes'.
The Trojans' Alexus Dye had another strong outing, earning her second-straight double-double and sixth of the season with 15-points and 13 rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Japonica James who scored a team-high 21, Jasmine Robinson who scored 19-points, including a career-high five triples, and Janiah Sandifer who scored a season-high, 11-points.
Coastal Carolina's DJ Williams had the best offensive day of any Division 1 player this season and the fifth best offensive performance of any D1 player since the 2016-17 season. On Coastal's strong offensive performance
"[DJ] Williams had and incredible game for them and that opened up a lot of other shots for other players and they have so many other offensive weapons besides just her. We got out of our game plan just trying to guard her but they just did a fantastic job. They went 40-for-43, 93 percent from the free throw line and anytime somebody scores 40-points from the free throw line it becomes a challenge to win."
Notables
• This is just the second time Troy has allowed more than 100-points in a game. The other was at No. 8 Mississippi State
• Coastal Carolina made its first 27 free throws. They ended the day 40-of-43 from the line
• CCU's 124-points is the most they've ever scored in a Sun Belt game. Their previous high was 97 at Troy back on Jan. 20, 2018
Up Next
Troy is back on the road Saturday in Boone, N.C. when they take on Appalachian State. Tip-off against the Mountaineers is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT).
