TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's basketball team outscored Tuskegee 48-20 in the first and fourth quarters to win its exhibition in Trojan Arena on Tuesday night, 79-57.
Four newcomers led the way for the Trojans, with Hannah Smith leading the team in scoring. She shot 5-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-6 from inside the arc for 15 points. Aniya Hubbard also had 12 points, tying Tiauna King (10 points) for a team-high two 3-pointers. Maliyah Meeks fell one rebound short of a double-double, with 10 points and nine rebounds – she also added a block and a steal.
Shakirah Edwards returned for her second season as a Trojan and stuffed the stat sheet with seven points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a team-high five blocks. All 11 Trojans who checked in had a steal in the ballgame, for a total of 19 steals.
The team excelled at shooting in the first and fourth quarters, hitting 45 and 58.3 percent, respectively. In the first quarter, the Trojans also went 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Meanwhile, the fourth quarter saw 60 percent shooting from beyond the arc. Overall, the Trojans shot 43.1 percent from the floor, while holding the Golden Tigers to 35.2 percent.
"We're very thankful for how we opened the season in Trojan Arena tonight," head coach Chanda Rigby said. "I'm also grateful to everyone who came out, especially the students. We started the game out rebounding and scoring strong. In the second half, we didn't start out great, so we're going to have to work on putting together a complete game. The big story tonight was the newcomers and unproven players. But we've had young players before. And the freshmen didn't act like freshmen even once. Maliyah led us in rebounds, and Hannah led us in scoring. Add the three returners, and we showed a lot to be proud of and plenty of potential to build on."
