Troy Basketball Set for Clash with No. 17 Texas Tech Friday Night on ESPN2

LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Troy men's basketball program is set for a Friday night nationally-televised ESPN2 matchup with the No. 17 ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders at United Supermarkets Arena.
The 8 p.m. tip will mark the sixth consecutive season that Troy will play a game on national television (2015-pres.) and the Trojans first ranked matchup since Troy played No. 11 Florida State back in the 2018-19 season.
Following Friday's matchup in Lubbock, the Trojans will head to Birmingham Sunday for a rivalry contest with UAB. Tip-off from Bartow Arena is set for 2 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT- (Troy- 1-1): The Trojans return to the hardwood for the first time since last Saturday on Friday night. Originally slated to play Wake Forest Wednesday afternoon in Winston-Salem, the Trojans will instead face Texas Tech Friday due to Wednesday's matchup against Wake getting canceled due to COVID-19 concerns inside the Demon Deacons program. Troy heads into Friday's matchup against No. 17 Texas Tech with an even 1-1 record. Last Friday afternoon, Troy opened the season with a hard-fought 66-64 victory over Western Carolina.
In that contest, true freshman Kam Woods exploded for 20 points, including 13 in the final period. The former two-time Alabama Class 6A Player of the Year also grabbed six rebounds and recorded three assists. Junior Zay Williams returned to action scoring 15 points and grabbing nine rebounds, while freshman Antwan Burnett added eight critical points. The Trojans overcame an 11-point (44-33) deficit, using a 16-5 run to take a 61-56 lead with two minutes to play.
On Saturday, Troy fell to UNCW 73-50 in the championship game of the Mako Medical Asheville Classic. In that contest, the Trojans were unable to overcome 12 Seahawk 3-pointers (10 in the first half), as UNCW outscored Troy 36-15 from behind the arc. In that contest, sophomore Desmond Williams led the way for the Trojans scoring 15 points.
LAST TIME OUT- (#17 Texas Tech- 2-1): The Texas Tech Red Raiders look to bounce back Friday night after suffering a tough 64-53 contest to then No. 17 Houston. In that game, Tech fell behind by as many as 20 points in the first half, but ultimately couldn't overcome that deficit. Georgetown transfer Mac McClung led the way for the Red Raiders, scoring 16 points on just 3-of-11 shooting. The junior missed all six of his attempts from behind the 3-point arc. Micah Peavy chipped in 12 points in the loss. After scoring in double-figures in both of the previous two games, Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year Marcus Santos-Silva was held to just 4 points and had 6 turnovers. The VCU transfer had 10 points and 13 rebounds in the opener against Northwestern State and scored 12 points and grabbed 10 boards against Sam Houston State.
Originally scheduled to play St. John's Thursday night on ESPN, the Red Raiders added the game with Troy after the matchup against St. John's was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns inside the Red Storm program.
So far this season McClung leads the way offensively for the Red Raiders averaging 16 points on an efficient 16-for-32 (.500) from the field. Sophomore Terrance Shannon, Jr. is the only other Red Raider that averages double-figures (11.0 PPG).

LONE [STAR] CONTEST
After originally slated to play Wednesday night in Winston-Salem against Wake Forest, the Trojans will face the 17th-ranked Red Raiders on Friday night on ESPN2. Sophomore Dez Williams scored 15 points in Saturday's game against UNCW. Williams shot an efficient 5-of-9 from the field and 3-of-6 from distance. It was his fourth career game with at least 15 points.
INTO THE WOODS
Freshman Kam Woods burst on the scene Friday afternoon scoring 20 points on an efficient 8-of-14 shooting. Woods added six rebounds and three assists. The freshman is one of two true freshmen (Jordan Varnado) in the last 10 years to record 20 points and grab six rebounds in his collegiate debut. Woods scored 28 points total in the two games against WCU and UNCW.
ZAY DAY
Junior Zay Williams made his triumphant return to action Friday, contributing 15 points and nine rebounds. Williams was a team-best plus-11 in his 25 minutes of action. On Saturday Williams turned in eight points and nine rebounds. The junior averaged 11.1 points a season ago.
ROAD WARRIORS
Troy will open the 2020-21 campaign with six straight games away from Trojan Arena. Troy was scheduled to open the season with a home game against Middle Georgia State but that game was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns inside the Knights program.
COVID CANCELATION
Troy's originally scheduled matchup at Wake Forest Wednesday was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns inside the Wake program. Troy will instead face Texas Tech this Friday night.
