Women's Basketball Completes Perfect Weekend with Win Over App State
1/4/2020 5:42:00 PM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Ala. – Troy women's basketball completed its opening weekend of Sun Belt Conference play Saturday afternoon by defeating Appalachian State 84-55. The win improves Troy's record to 11-2 on the year and extends the Trojans' winning streak to eight games, which is tied for the second longest winning streak in program history.
When the game tipped off it looked like Troy and App State were headed for a tight contest throughout where neither team was able to go on any long runs as both teams kept traded baskets. Troy was the first team to put together back-to-back scoring plays as Amber Rivers and Alexus Dye hit consecutive jumpers to give Troy an early 9-5 advantage which then sparked a 9-0 run that allowed Troy to put a little distance between themselves and App State.
With an eight-point advantage going into the second-quarter Troy did everything they could to finally pull away from App State, but the Mountaineers Ashley Polacek continued to hit tough shots and keep her team in it, scoring a game-high 22-points.
After each team scored just 15-points in the second Troy came out of the locker room looking determined to put the game away early. They jumped out to a quick 43-29 lead thanks to a 10-2 run in the first two minutes of the second half. Following a Mountaineers triple from Lainey Gosnell that ended Troy's initial run, the Trojans turned around and scored seven straight, six coming from Tyasia Moore who ended the day with 10, on their way to outscoring App State 31-11 in the third and owning a commanding, 64-36 advantage heading into the final frame.
In the fourth, Troy outscored App State 20-19 to walk away with an 84-55 victory and close out the opening weekend of conference play as one of just three schools to go 2-0.

Quoting Coach Rigby
Second conference game opinion
"Happy as a coach can be being 2-0 in the Sun Belt. We're shooting as good as we have from the first half earlier this week to the end of today. Mainly depending on scoring inside but we've had other contributors and that really helps."

On Leading the team in scoring
"Teammates push and encourage me as well as having coaches who support me. Getting in the gym has helped me average so many points and having the encouragement of coaches helps."
