Cross Country Trek to the Azalea City Classic
9/5/2019 4:10:00 PM | Cross Country
TROY, Ala. – The Troy cross country team travels to Mobile, Ala., to race in the Azalea City Classic at Brookley Field Golf Course. The women's 5K race is set to begin at 5:50pm with the men's 5K to follow at 6:20 p.m.
Â
"The handful of women we have competing need to shake things up and keep moving," head coach Elliot Blount said. "Even though we are smaller, everyone can help each other improve."
Â
After a second-place finish in the JSU Struts Season Opener last Friday, Blount opts for a smaller line up on the women's side. The Trojans will turn to senior Michaela Ashley, whose best finish last season came at the Azalea City Classic where she finished ninth, to lead a group of younger classmen.
Â
Sophomores Caroline Franklin and Katie Smith and freshmen Baylee Evans and Summer Williams close out the lineup for the women.Â
Â
"We are hoping to get the men to run together deep into the race," Blount said. "It's a small field so sticking close to one another shouldn't be an issue."
Â
For the men, Blount will return all eight of its runners from last week. Bradley Dixon led the Trojans with a ninth-place finish, his best finish since the senior placed fifth at the JSU Foothills Invitational in 2017. Freshman Silas Franklin was the Trojans second highest finisher with a 25th-place finish.
Racing against the Trojans will be Lawson State, Mobile and host South Alabama.
