TROY, Ala. – Troy completed a 2-0 week to open Sun Belt play Friday night with a sweep over Little Rock, 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-16). The win marked the first time in school history the Trojans have defeated Little Rock and Arkansas State in the same season.
The Trojans (12-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) took advantage of a loud home crowd en route to beginning league play 2-0 for the first time since 2011.
Cheyenne Hayes provided offensively as usual with a team-high 14 kills, but it was Troy's freshman that provided the offensive spark. Ashley Guenveur recorded double-digit kills for the second match in a row with 12 on the night while Julia Brooks added eight kills on .471 hitting and three blocks.
Amara Anderson proved yet again that she is one of the best setters in the country with 35 assists and three blocks. Lacey Jeffcoat remained strong in the back row for Troy, finishing with 13 digs on the night.
"We're all battling to be the top two teams in our division, and we only get one shot at these teams from the West," head coach Josh Lauer said. "This was our shot and we took it. We still have a long road ahead of us, but it was a good first weekend."
Set One
Little Rock remained close with the Trojans early in the first set before Troy opened up an eight-point lead at 21-13. Little Rock would respond with a run of their own to pull within five at 23-18. Guenveur came up big with a kill for the Trojans to clinch the set, 25-19. Hayes was locked in early, registering six of her 14 digs in the opening set.
Set Two
Troy stifled the Little Rock attack in the second set, holding the opposing attack percentage to .000. The Trojans jumped out to a quick 7-4 lead, forcing an early Little Rock timeout. Troy kept rolling through the timeout, however, building their lead to 12-5 and later 17-9. A late Little Rock timeout couldn't stop the Trojans as they won the set, 25-14.
Set Three
Troy held Little Rock to an even lower attack percentage (-.143) in a dominant final set. Troy jumped out to a strong 7-2 lead and never looked back en route to its 25-16 set four win. Brooks and Guenveur each tallied three kills in the final stanza while Natalie Hummel anchored the defense with five digs.
