Cross County Opens Season at the Struts Season Opener

TROY, Ala. – The Troy cross country team will kick off its 2019 season Friday at the JSU Struts Season Opener at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama. The women begin their 4K trek at 6 p.m. with the men's 5K to follow.
Â
"Cross country season openers are probably one of the best ways to see where a student-athlete is both physically and mentally," head coach Elliot Blount said. "I'm giving them freedom to explore their fitness. From there, we can clean up what we need to for the Azalea City Classic next week."
Â
The Trojan women return their top three runners from last season in Carolina Sall, Tanner Guest and Kara Coluter. Sall led the way with three top finishes last fall, including a second-place finish at the Waston Ford Invitational. Guest paced the Trojans at the Sun Belt Championship with a 23rd-place finish and Coulter was Troy's top finisher at the NCAA South Regional.
Â
Blount also returns a solid group of three sophomores with Caroline Franklin, Tanner Guest and Katie Smith while freshmen Baylee Evans, Cadi Rowe and Summer Williams are set to begin their colligate careers this weekend.
Â
On the men's side, Blount's lineup will have a new look as Troy's top two runners from a year ago have graduated. The Trojans will turn to senior Bradley Dixon, who was Troy's top finisher of the returners in the NCAA South Regional, and a core group of experienced runners with Isaiah Eller, Thomas Ward, Austin Gray and Blake Vaughn.
Â
Freshmen Mason Bennett, James Brake and Silas Franklin are set for their colligate debuts and close out the lineup. Â
Â
The Trojans compete against a field of 20 schools that includes in-state foes Auburn and Jacksonville State.
