TIGER WATCH:
The Jackson State Lady Tigers enter the 2019 season under new management, as first-year head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites looks to mark his mark. The former Arkansas-Pine Bluff head coach is no stranger to the Southwestern Athletic Conference, having spent the previous two seasons at UAPB. The Lady Tigers look to improve on a 2018 campaign that saw the team go 2-16 overall. Overall, JSU was projected to finish eighth in the 11-team 2019 SWAC preseason poll. The Lady Tigers return several key members of the 2018 squad including preseason All-SWAC selection Jalah Carter.
GOLDEN HOUR:
The Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles and head coach Steve Springthorpe will look to take the next step in 2019, after completing a 7-8-2 regular season last year. The Golden Eagles, who missed out on the eight-team Ohio Valley Conference Soccer Championship a season ago, were projected to finish eighth overall in this season's preseason poll. Versatile senior Kaitie Shipley returns for her final season, after playing every single minute of the Golden Eagles 2018 campaign that saw the team allow just 22 goals in 17 matches.
THANK U, NEXT:
Troy will hit the road for the first time this season next weekend (Aug. 30-Sept.1), traveling to Mobile, Ala., for the Jaguar Classic. Friday's matchup with Stetson is scheduled for 4 p.m., while Sunday's finale versus UAB is scheduled for 6 p.m.
GED TALKS:
"Tomorrow night is what the girls have been looking forward to since last November. It's going to be a great time. Hopefully we'll have our normal Friday night fans helping us as well. We expect Jackson State to come in tomorrow evening with a lot of energy. They have a very good head coach that has just taken over, so I'm sure they're going to be a tough matchup for us. So hopefully we can put on a good show."
On the exhibition matches against Samford and North Alabama:
"I thought last weekend was good for us because we got a lot of players minutes on the field. We were able to get Melissa [Kuya-Strobel] on the field for the first time in over a year, in addition to a few of our newcomers, so I think we used the exhibition matches properly. Having both matches be in the same weekend gets the girls accustom to the Friday-Sunday schedule that we will see during the regular season. I think it was good that we got a chance to play in the heat on Sunday because it got their bodies accustom to that aspect as well, so there were a lot of positives to take out of the two exhibitions."
