Track & Field Ready for Sun Belt Conference Championships

Troy, Ala. – Troy track & field travels to Jonesboro, Ark., for the Sun Belt Conference Championships held at Arkansas State from Friday until Sunday at the Arkansas State Track Facility.Â

The meets first event is the decathlon beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday with field events starting at 10 a.m. and running events at 6:40 p.m. On Saturday, the decathlon begins at 9 a.m., field events start at 12:30 p.m. and running events are set for 5:30 p.m. The final day commences with field events at 11:30 a.m. and will conclude with running events at 4 p.m.Â

The later events each day will be broadcast live on ESPN+. Friday's showing will begin at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's at 4:30 p.m. and the final broadcast on Sunday is set for 4 p.m.

CONFERENCE HONORS
This season two Trojans – senior Niata Alexander and sophomore Jared Hayes, have earned Sun Belt Conference Track Athlete of the Week honors.Â

Alexander earned the award on April 24, after posting a personal record and moving into second all-time at Troy in the 400m race with a time of 53.69 seconds, good for second place at the War Eagle Invitational. Additionally, Alexander was a member of the 4x100m relay team that set the Troy school record at the War Eagle Invitational with a time of 45.42 seconds.

Hayes took home the accolade a week prior to Alexander on April 17, after winning the 200m race at the Joe Walker Invitational in a season best time of 20.89. His race-winning time is the fastest 200m men's time in the Sun Belt Conference this season.Â

LAST TIME OUT
Troy began championship competition when it competed in the 125th Penn Relays from April 25-27 and stepped up to the challenge by setting three school records.Â

The women's 4x400m relay team of seniors Niata Alexander and Tiarra Bailey and sophomores Madison Kennedy and Precious Ogba bested their previous school record set on day one (3:40.15) with a time of 3:40.09, placing them sixth in the College Women's 4x400 Championship of America Invitational section.
Â
Freshmen Tanner Guest and Maya Kelly, sophomore Macki Walsh and junior Gemma Finch teamed up to run the women's distance medley race and finished in a new school record time of 12:00.14. The teams' time is more than 23 seconds faster than previous school record set at the Florida Relays earlier this season.

The women's shuttle hurdle relay team of Garrett, senior Sydney Henderson, junior JaMeeka Middlebrooks and sophomore Michaela Thompson set the school record with a time of 56.82 seconds, securing third overall in the championship event.
