TROY, Alabama – Troy freshman Leanna Johnson has been tabbed as the Community Coffee Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Johnson, a Brantley, Alabama product, took the award after picking up the win over North Alabama and two wins over UT Arlington last week. Johnson gave up only one run over 22 innings of work to record a 0.32 ERA and fanned 11 batters.
The freshman pitched a two-hit shutout over North Alabama in a midweek tilt on Wednesday followed by a win in extra innings on Friday afternoon against UT Arlington. Johnson's week was capped off by a Saturday afternoon shutout to guide Troy to the series sweep.
Johnson has dazzled in the circle entering the week ranked 10th nationally in victories with 16 and 17th nationally in strikeouts with 142. The honor is the first weekly award claimed by a Troy player in 2019.
"I am very proud of Leanna and the week she had for this program," head coach Beth Mullins said. "She showed a lot of grit and fight in the circle and was a big part of our 4-0 week."
Johnson and the Trojans are back in action with four games this week. Alabama State comes to Troy for a midweek matchup Tuesday at 6 p.m. before the Trojans host Georgia State for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series starting on Friday night at 6 p.m.
