TROY, Alabama – Troy has finished first or second at the Sun Belt Women's Golf Championship each of the last five seasons, and the Trojans head to the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach this week looking for their fourth title in six years.
Play at the Sun Belt Championship runs Monday thru Wednesday with teams playing 18 holes each day. The winner earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. Live coverage of the Sun Belt Championship will be available on ESPN+.
"I'm excited because we are finally playing some of our best golf of the year," head coach Randy Keck said. "We've got a little bit better all year long, and I finally feel like we're getting close to playing our best. If we take care of our business, we have a chance to win."
Troy has posted a 297.2 scoring average as a team in the spring, almost four shots better than its fall average. The Trojans have a pair of rounds in the 280s and three of the five players in the lineup have better spring averages than what they posted in the fall.
Keck will turn to a veteran lineup with three seniors – Bianca Lohbauer, Sarah Harrison and Lindsey Harrison – in addition to freshman Nicole Lorup and sophomore Judith Castro.
"It's a huge bonus to be going in with some veteran players," Keck said. "You don't see many teams win championships with a lot of young players in the lineup. Our three seniors have played in a lot of golf tournaments during their time at Troy and I'm confident in them. Our young players have certainly helped elevate our play this year."
Lohbauer is playing near the best golf of her career heading into the Sun Belt Championship with a 73.45 average this spring including a pair of top-10 finishes. She and Lorup lead the Trojans with all but one of their rounds this season counting towards the team card. Lohbauer has three rounds under par this season with two coming this spring in addition to a pair of rounds at par.
Lorup is on pace for the best season by a freshman in school history as she enters the Sun Belt Championship with a 74.12 stroke average and 2.46 score vs. par. She leads Troy with four rounds under par this year and is tied with Lohbauer with three top-10 finishes on the year; she has led Troy in five of nine events.
Sarah Harrison has turned in a solid spring with a 74.91 average to lower her season mark to 75.39 with a 3.78 score vs. par. She shot a 6-under 65 in the spring opener to tie the lowest round in school history.
Lindsey Harrison has Sun Belt Championship pedigree after finishing 10that last year's event and enters this year's Championship with a 77.20 stroke average on the year. Castro has posted a 75.25 average this spring which is more than three shots lower than her fall mark.
The LPGA International will play 6,060 yards for the Sun Belt Championship and will play to a par 72.
"I've won a national championship on that golf course when I was Redlands (CC) so I know the course fairly well," Keck said. "It is not a course where you're going to make a lot of birdies, it is going to be an endurance test."
