DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – Lindsey Harrison fired a 2-under 70 and Troy shot 3-over as a team in Monday's opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Women's Golf Championship at the LPGA International Hills Course. Harrison is in a four-way tie for first and Troy is a shot back in second place with 36 holes remaining.
"I was really proud of our seniors and how they played today," head coach Randy Keck said. "We had a really good game plan today and they executed exactly what we wanted them to do."
Harrison, a senior from Panama City Beach, Fla., carded four birdies on the day to pace the Trojans and is tied for the best in the field with a 3-under on the par 4s. She blitzed the front nine with a 3-under 33 including back-to-back birdies before the turn. Harrison stumbled with a double-bogey on the par-5 16th but bounced right back with a birdie on No. 17.
"We worked really hard on her swing last week and she hit the ball fantastic today," Keck said. "She has worked really hard on her game this spring and looked really comfortable on the course today."
Troy has now been in the top three in the standings at the Sun Belt Championship for 17 consecutive rounds. The Trojans are in search of their fourth league title in the past six seasons and the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals.
Keck's other two seniors in the lineup responded as well with Sarah Harrison firing an even-par 72 to sit tied for eighth place and Bianca Lohbauer a shot back in 11that 1-over.
Sarah Harrison made the turn at 1-over following a pair of bogeys and one birdie on the front nine before quickly getting back even with a birdie on the par-4 ninth. She finished her round with eight straight pars. Lohbauer bogeyed two of her first three holes before settling down for 15 pars and a birdie on the par-4 13thto close out her day.
Sophomore Judith Castro was steady with a 4-over 76 to finish the day tied for 26thplace while freshman Nicole Lorup carded a pair of birdies in a round of 5-over; she is tied for 31stplace and saw her score not count towards the team card for just the second time in 27 rounds this year.
"I told them they just need to relax and go out and do the same thing tomorrow," Keck said. "We've played well all spring so today was just a continuation of that. You have to pick your spots on this course on where you can be aggressive, and we did an okay job of taking advantage of those opportunities today."
Texas State holds a one-shot lead over both Troy and Georgia Southern following Monday's action while South Alabama is four shots back of the Trojans in fourth.
