TROY, Ala. – Louisiana's Hayden Cantrelle picked up a two-out RBI in the top of the ninth to pull the Cajuns ahead of Troy, 4-3, in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field in Sun Belt Conference action.
The Trojans (13-14, 3-6) and Cajuns (13-16, 4-5) were locked in a pitchers' duel for most of the game, as both starting pitchers were effective in their respective outings. Troy's Grant Stewart allowed two runs on four hits and fanned six through six innings for a quality start; while Louisiana's Jack Burk dealt five innings and scattered five hits around four strikeouts and allowed one unearned run.
Troy struck first in the fifth inning with an unearned run scoring on a passed ball. It then fell behind the Cajuns after a two-run homer from Handsome Monica in the top of the sixth. Rigsby Mosley came through with a big game-tying, RBI double down the left field line in the seventh – his 11th double of the season.
Both teams went back-and-forth with run-scoring innings in the late goings. Troy tied the game with a two-out, solo jack from Cole Prestegard to straightaway center in the eighth inning. Cantrelle's ninth-inning heroics then iced it away, handing the loss to Rush Hixon (2-2).
The Trojans had a chance to tie things up with a runner at third and two outs in the bottom of the ninth. However, Gunner Leger (1) forced a groundout to earn his first save in his first relief appearance this season. Despite allowing the Prestegard homer, Connor Cooke (3-0) picked up the win in the contest.
Dalton Sinquefield kept up his hot streak at the plate, recording his ninth multi-hit game in conference play so far this season. Sinquefield leads all league players with 21 hits through the first three Sun Belt series of the year.
