TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Sophomore Reed Smith blasted a two-out grand slam in the top of the second to help propel Troy to an 8-4 victory over in-state foe Alabama at Sewell-Thomas Stadium Tuesday night.
Smith put an 0-1 pitch off the scoreboard to get the Trojans' (14-14) bats up and running – his third career homer and first career grand slam. Troy followed up the four-run frame with a three-run third on its way to its first win over the Crimson Tide (20-10) in Tuscaloosa since 2007.
After Sadler Goodwin (2-3) singled in a run in the third, the senior was called to the mound and proceeded to work 6.1 innings of long relief – earning the win after allowing three runs on four hits. Two of the runs came on a ninth-inning homer from John Trousdale, who led the Tide with a 2-for-2 day off the bench.
On a night where hits came at a premium, Chase Smartt was the only Trojan to record multiple hits – going 2-for-4 with a double in the contest. Manning Early and Caleb Bartolero also added RBI to contribute to the four-run victory.
Connor Shamblin (2-1) took the loss, despite fanning three and allowing just one hit in the first two innings of the game – the one hit was Smith's grand slam. The rest of the Tide staff shut down the Trojan bats, allowing just two hits and one unearned run in the final 6.2 innings of the ballgame.
Quotable – Troy head coach Mark Smartt
"The grand slam was definitely a big moment. I'm really proud of Reed (Smith); he hasn't had an at-bat in a few weeks but he worked really hard to get back to this point. The story of the night, though, was the performance on the mound by Sadler Goodwin. I really hate he gave up the two-run homer in the ninth because I wanted him to finish it. But, tonight was the best midweek game we've played all year and I'm really happy for our team because we are playing much better baseball."
