Troy Walks-Off Cajuns in Opener

TROY, Ala. – Senior Chase Smartt sent a ball deep enough into right field to score Dalton Sinquefield on a walk-off sacrifice fly to push Troy past Louisiana, 5-4, in the Sun Belt series opener Friday night at Riddle-Pace Field.
Sinquefield kicked off the ninth with a single up the middle before Sadler Goodwin walked to put two on with no outs in the frame. The Trojans (12-13, 2-5) then moved both into scoring position with a textbook sacrifice bunt from pinch-hitter Tyler Head. After the Cajuns (12-15, 3-4) intentionally walked Logan Cerny to load the bases, Smartt stepped up and drove in the game-winning run to send the ragin' Riddle-Pace crowd home happy.
After falling behind 0-3 in the first, Troy responded with single runs in the second and third, then a two-run fourth to take the lead. Rigsby Mosley drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single in the first – Mosley and Sinquefield both finished with two hits in the contest.
The late-inning heroics wouldn't have been possible without the bullpen performances from Taylor Pridgen, Lance Johnson, Ryan Fultz and Rush Hixon. Pridgen entered in emergency relief when it appeared that starter Levi Thomas had injured his arm in the first and went on to work 3.2 innings, allowing just one run on two hits.
Johnson, Fultz and Hixon combined to hold the Cajuns hitless for the final five official innings of the game. Hixon (2-1) earned the win while throwing just two pitches in the ninth and forcing a groundout.
Louisiana combined a lead-off walk and three consecutive base hits to strike for three before the Trojans could even get an out in the top of the first. Todd Lott hit one of the RBI doubles in the inning and went on to lead the Cajuns with a 2-for-4 day with a walk and two runs scored.
Despite a stellar relief outing, Brandon Young (0-3) took the loss on the mound. Young went 5.2 innings and allowed just one run on two hits with eight strikeouts and four walks.
Quotable – Troy head coach Mark Smartt
"It seems like every time we play those guys it comes down to something late. I'm really proud of these guys; they had to go through a lot of adversity in this game. We were down 3-0 four batters in and our starter comes out with a sore arm. To be down like that and come back to win, 5-4, it takes something really special and that's what our guys brought tonight."
