The Trojans (13-13, 3-5) started the game with four consecutive singles to plate a couple of runs, then went on to score two more runs on two more hits in the opening frame. A three-run second – highlighted by a two-RBI double from Sadler Goodwin – put Troy in complete control of the game. Goodwin finished the game 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Manning Early ripped a couple of RBI singles in the first and fourth innings– one of six Trojans to drive in at least one run in the game. Drew Frederic effectively iced the game away with his team-leading fifth homer of the season, a solo bomb in the bottom of the seventh. Frederic reached base in all five plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with a couple of walks, an RBI and three runs scored.
Cory Gill (2-1) was given an early lead by his offense and comfortably fanned seven batters through five innings of work to pick up the win. The junior allowed three runs – two earned – on six hits and a couple of walks to earn his second win in as many starts.
Louisiana (12-16, 3-5) wouldn't go away quietly, though, as it struck for four runs in the middle three innings to keep things interesting. Hayden Cantrelle led the Cajuns at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance. Austin Perrin (2-3) wore the loss in a brief start, giving up four runs on six hits in just 0.2 innings of work.
Quotable – Troy head coach Mark Smartt
"Well we got off to a great start, which we haven't done often. We put up four runs in the first with a couple of hard-hit balls, then added a three-spot; two big innings right out of the shoot and fortunately that's all we needed. We continued to score, which you need to do to take the pressure off your pitchers. But it was a big win for us and more importantly we were able to win the series in two games."
