Troy Sweeps Day One of USF Invitational

CLEARWATER, Florida โ Troy's powerful offense recorded 22 hits to lead the Trojans to a pair of wins Friday afternoon at Eddie C. Moore Field. Leanna Johnson pitched a shutout over Furman before closing out the win over Binghamton.

Johnson scattered seven hits over 10 innings of work to lead Troy (14-5) in the circle. Brooke Echols led the way offensively with four RBIs after hitting a three-run shot against Furman (2-10). ย

"I thought our offense was consistent all day and did a great Job of putting runs on the board," head coach Beth Mullins said. "It was just a good consistent day and we got two solid team wins."

Game One: Troy 9, Furman 0

Leanna Johnson (8-1) scattered just three hits with six strikeouts in six innings of work to shut out Furman.

Brooke Echols solidified the win for Troy with a long ball to left field to add three more runs to the board in the third inning. Before Echols' home run, Talia Truitt scored on a fielder's choice by Katie Lively.

Troy struck first in the top of the first inning when Katie Webb singled to score Talia Truitt who led off the inning with a walk.

After the big third inning, a double by Hope Hernnadez and a single by Truitt added another run to Troy's lead in the top of the fourth.

Hernandez hit another double in the top of the fifth that scored Echols who got on after being hit by a pitch.

After adding two more runs in the top of the seventh with hits from Stephanie Snyder, Herenandez and Kelly Horne, Kynsley Rae Blasingame sat down the Paladins in order to close out the game.

Mackense Greico (0-4) suffered the loss after allowing six hits, a walk and a hit by pitch.

Game Two: Troy 6, Binghamton 3

Troy had two three-run innings to power them past Binghamton (3-2) in the afternoon game.

In the top of the second, a hit by pitch and four walks scored the first two of Troy's three runs. Katie Webb capped off the rally with a single through the left side to score the third run of the inning.

In the bottom half of the inning, Binghamton scored off of a fielder's choice out to second scoring Makayla Alverez who got on by a single.

Back-to-back singles followed by a sacrifice fly put the game within one, but Troy answered in the top of the fourth with three more runs with singles by Webb and Echols and doubles by Bailey Taylor and Kaylee Hussey.

Binghamton answered with one more run, but Leanna Johnson would shut out in three consecutive innings to finish out the game.

Johnson, who entered the weekend leading the nation in strikeouts, added 10 more strikeouts and two more wins to her resume.

Troy continues play in the USF Invitational tomorrow at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. against
South Carolina and Incarnate Word.
